Does anyone remember who coined the term gas ( guitar acquisition syndrome )? I want to say it was Adrian Belew, but I could very well be wrong.

It's certainly possible that Adrian coined the term, he's been active in music since before I first heard the term, which was in the late 1980s on Fidonet.

Walter Becker has usually been nominated as the coiner. Who actually used it first may remain a mystery - but I'd guess there was an Iberian lute player in the 1600's who got the disease and hoarded as many of the new guitarras he/she/it could afford, plus one more. And maybe just one more. And...

BTW, the politically correct term these days is gear acquisition syndrome.

It always has been gear, not guitar, for as long as I can remember the term being used.
For me personally, that dates back to the early 90s.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Can't remember when I heard it first, but here's the Walter Becker/Guitar Player Magazine article, originally from 1996: http://sdarchive.com/gas.html

Mind you (that's a generic 'you'), AFAIK, he's never claimed to have invented the name.

It definitely predated 1996.
It was used it on Fidonet at least '92 if not before.

Who originated the term? That’s a tough one. Walter Becker is reported to have popularized it as Guitar Acquired Syndrome in Guitar Magazine 1996. His article was titled G.A.S.

But, as mentioned earlier in this thread, it had been circling around before that as Gear Acquired Syndrome. My guess is that ‘Gear’ would be original, and because it does not only relate to guitar gear, it is possible that photography may have an upper hand here, or other, based on the amount of gear available well before electric guitars and the associated hardware. Hard to say.

Other than that, I’m going with JMattis and his Iberian lute player in the 1600's or an ancient drummer from the Congo. ROTFL
