Good Day All,
My father made it to America through music and is turning 65 in a month. For his birthday I am trying to surprise him with virtually the same bass he had back in the 70s. I know I can not afford a real late 1960's / early 1970's Fender Jazz Bass... but I was able to find a brand new in box Vintage 74 American made which is being shipped to me from the town in Germany my father is from! Thought that was pretty cool. With that being said all all pictures from the old timers days are in black and white. Thankfully Fender had very limited color options and it is very obvious he is playing a 3 tone sunburst, rosewood fretboard, and pearl white block inlays. The years they started doing this was Late 60's / Early 70's. It was 74 they moved the Finger Placement attachment from the bottom of the strings to the top for you to rest your thumb on. His was on the bottom.

The one difference I notice with the 74 that is being delivered is the pick guard...

Can anyone tell me if the guard is flat black or the shiny red? Majority of all the basses back then where the shiny red however I just can not tell with my untrained eye. I want to get a custom pickguard made with the generational correct finger placement piece on the bottom.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your time.

First post delays to combat spam are a problem here. Can't tell from the B&W pics, but based on this pic:

That pickguard is not "flat black".

The standard pickguard would have been a brown tortoiseshell.

Maybe the best solution is to give him the bass you bought and ask him what the pickguard he had was after the surprise.

This place may have the pickguard you need, if you can't get it from Fender.

Disclaimer: I've never done business with this vendor, it's not an endorsement.

Cheers,
vinyl

+1

Fender's contemporary tortoise shell pickguards look like CRAP.

Go with the 11-screw, aftermarket type as featured in the posted link above (retro red looks to be an authentic match). Be sure to specify where you want the holes for mounting the tug bar.

Your dad has himself one fine son!
