In the current issue of Guitar magazine (about Hendrix's debut in London in 1966), there's a quote by Yes bassist Chris Squire about a night when his band (The Loving Kind) were booked to support the Jimi Hendrix Experience at some venue in London.

According to Squire, when they walked into the club, Hendrix was trying to show the bass part to "Purple Haze" to Noel Redding, who was having trouble learning it. Squire says that the Experience didn't play Purple Haze that night because of Noel not being able to learn his part.

Obviously, this was during the very early days of the Hendrix Experience.

I don't think it's a true story. According to 'Jimi Hendrix: Sessions' by John McDermott, with Billy Cox and Eddie Kramer, Jimi begin writing the lyrics to Purple Haze on Dec 26, 1966, the riff had came to him about ten days earlier.

It did take a them awhile to record it, about 4hrs and they played it live on BBC shortly after it was released as a single.

I'd believe about 1 out of every 93 stories told about 'Hendrix In London' by rock stars.
