Yeah. I recorded and watched it earlier this week, Mud. Pretty interesting. I knew a lot of that, and am a fan of both Link and Canadian home boy Robbie Robertson (he did a lot of TV back in the day as did Buffy). I and others consider Robbie somewhat of a genius if you check out the depth and collections he has made and contributed to. Jesse Ed Davis, Steve Salas, and Randy Castillo were icing on the cake. I really dug how the brothers gave credit to the Indian for having the blues earlier on. That was surprising.

It doesn’t stop there though, Mud. Here in Winnipeg and across Canada, and I’m sure on your side of the border, the indigenous rock/pop/country/folk music continues. Some years back I directed a weekly series that featured local performers, and since 1999 the city hosts the headquarters for APTN, a first rate Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (the first ever) that technically and production wise can compete with any network. Along with festivals and an annual nation wide music award show hosted here the indigenous music contributions around the world are alive and well.

Here is a sampling from the recent past:

I know similar support is given elsewhere, and that my friends is a good thing which we have directly or indirectly experienced as the documentary shows.

I’m with Mud. Check out RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World. It rocks.

Fender Strat Brat Thanks for the follow up. Indigenous Music Awards, I did not know this, you people up in Canada your so progressive, and I can relate to why my farther in law quit here and moved there and received a dual citizen, he lived in Victoria BC and never looked back, until he died, and than against his wishes his siblings brought him back here for his interment

FYI
We have since learned that she does not actually have Cree blood in her as we previously believed.
It's now believed her father had lead her as a young girl to believe she was part Cree.
His family confirms this is false.

There is Redbone.
California I believe?

Well, I’ll be a guppy. Who knows? Maybe I sat across from your father-in-law having a brewsky in one of Victoria’s many pubs. Small world.

Sometimes, we’re too progressive, Mud; but, we haven’t figured that out yet. We like to live on the edge in a country that has brain freeze. LOL.

Cheers!

Thanks, for bringing Shania’s story to my attention, BMW-KTM. I hadn’t heard that; but, after reading about it, it’s plain to see that there sure are questions as to Shania’s heritage or acceptance. Sorry to hear that to be the case in any form.

This lays it out nicely.

As for Redbone (Pat and Lolly Vegas. How’s that for a show name?) you are right (LA), and it’s part of the documentary.

Interesting link.
There was some info on there I had not seen before, mostly about her adopted father.
I can't seem to find the article I read a couple of years ago.
From it I got the impression her biological dad was trying to get "status" by claiming Cree blood and she was somehow dragged into that discussion as a girl and that was what lead her to believe that she had Cree blood.
The Ojibway adopted father is all news to me.
I was never much of a fan, other than that she is obviously a beautiful woman.
Clearly a talented singer too ... if you're into that sort of thing.
Personally , I was never really a country & western kinda guy.

Speaking of country and western, around here there used to be a radio station years ago where their claim to fame was that they played BOTH kinds of music; country AND western.
LOL

Curiously enough, having lived deep in the heart of RedNeck country for most of my adult life I never did learn the difference between "country" and "western" music.

Thanks for posting. I'll have to check it out. I'm not much of a fan of Shania's music
but I remember seeing part of a TV concert many years ago and her band was great.

No worries about having to sit through listening to Shania on the documentary, Mike. She’s not in it. I got taken to a concert when she had just hit the big time. You are right about her band. The one she had at the time blew me away. Each player, including a drummer from Vegas and a dynamite electric fiddle player, supported the guitarists that rocked. I think that’s usually the case with the top country acts.

I remember as a kid reading and hearing that when Buck Owens went on tour to Europe he would treat the audience and sometimes hilight the Buckaroos without him. They would rock it out as only American bands knew how to back then. Believe me when I say it wasn’t Buck’s usual Opry style Country, and man oh man could they cook. :D

Indigenous Things We Do - Nice Rev’.

Here’s a born in Saskatchewan now living in Calgary well known and respected producer/director, actor/writer, singer/songwriter, philanthropist, and much more, that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting through work. He’s quite the guy with Canada’s highest honour and he’s very talented.

Peace

I haven't watched this yet, but I will soon. As far as Native Americans go, the first name I think of is Robbie Robertson. I was glad to see that he was covered in this special. As far as the Band goes, I was not much of a fan of them. I downloaded the 2003 extended version of the Last Waltz (minus all the stuff I didn't like -- the final result was still 2.5 hrs long), and -- little by little -- I became a huge fan of them. Come to find out later that Robbie (besides his awesome guitar playing) was the sole songwriter on the songs that I loved. What a talent Robbie is. The Band is now one of my very favorite bands that only took me 30 years to discover...
