Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing - Chris Isaak
La Grange - ZZ
Same song - different song.
No?
Discuss.

I'm in my little studio a few minutes ago rocking out on La Grange because it occurred to me it's been 20+ years since I played that one and suddenly I hear Chris Isaak in my head.

At first I dismissed it as nothing more than synaptic crossfire .... something that "apparently" happens to some people after they turn 50 ... who am I to judge?

Then I started thinking about it.

Same Rhythm.
Same tempo.
Probably same chords.
Same cadence.

We all know there are many more.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Whenever I hear The Game of Love by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, this might be a stretch, I hear Louie Louie, albeit there are differences.

1963 The Kingsmen:

1955 Richard Berry’s original:

and Richard’s composition is said to have been influenced by:

It's amazing how many songs you can play with the same 4 chords.

Great list, Mike. Then there are those 4 chord songs in the book that, unless you are an accomplished musician, sneakily present you with cramping and turn you into a contortionist. I think those songs are just for the author to act like a show off and, sometimes, I think they’re not real chords. That’s why they call them Fake books.

Louie Louie, La bamba, Wild thing, Pretty woman, Hang on sloopy, Summer nights (grease). These songs are basically the same chords with variations so each song is recognizable. Pick your key and you can transition from one song to the next so it fits. It works, we (my old band) would do this at rehearsal just for fun :D

Excellent point, SBLS. I did that for a sing song with family this weekend. After all, it was the three chords I know. :P The cool thing is that if the initial key is wrong for your voice it only gets worse.

My theory is that those fake books are usually transcribed by keyboard players, and they use chords that no problem for them but could potentially make guitar players hurt themselves.

I like that the theory. I never thought of it that way, but I noticed many of the books are not like the ones I had in the 60s and even the lyrics are spread over more page turns. Since monopolies took over it seems like they crammed a lot of keyboard with guitar to make a buck. Might as well throw in drum notation and a triangle.

Good point, schnepf13.
