I took delivery of my '89 Clapton Wednesday evening and set about comparing that neck to my CS and did some comparative measurements because my CS was to have been fitted with the Clapton neck profile.

The Clapton neck is not one piece. It has a maple board carrying 22 vintage frets. My CS has a rosewood board carrying 22 medium-jumbo frets. Net result is that at the 12th and 13th frets the CS neck becomes about 1/16 inch thicker an that is the reason for the 'chunkier' feel.

In retrospect now, I might not have ordered the guitar, or had it designed differently, with an all maple neck, not rosewood. The '57 Hotrod had not happened yet, so that could not have been a consideration as a starting point.

Glad you found that neck agreeable. I had every expectation that you might.

Doc

According to specs, the upgrade is in the headstock and the pickups. The rest of the specs appear the same. Given the track record, the guitar likely has the 'modern C-neck' which is the workhorse of the line and goes on everything unless there's a unique reason for something otherwise.

If anyone out there knows otherwise, you will hear from them.

Doc

FYI: Took my '89 in to my local GC to have it set up. Checked the current Clapton against this guitar. Definite difference in the neck profile above the 12th fret. New guitar is a bit thicker, like my CS. Prefer the '89's neck much more.

You know Doc I think your right.I checked out Harmony Central and saw reviews on the '02 HWY1 and they listed the modern "C" shape neck as being on it.Which I have to say I do like it.I love the neck on my guitar and I belive alot has to do with the satin finish as opposed to the gloss. :D
