I use my local store (Ben Jacks) because GC is too far away and they usually don't even put tax on anything (unless its something big). Say a set of strings is 6.99, the guy's just like "just give me 7 bucks"

Would prefer to buy guitars in small local stores for political reasons..
I just haven't found a non-chain store with a wide Fender product range over here  over the internet is also an option as it is cheap but we still need the shops to try guitars

Unfortunately the nearest music store is about an 8 hour drive. I guess it'll have to be online

If I want it cheap... online

If I want it fast, the local Guitar Center

I have a local shop 2.5 miles from my house, but they cater to the local high school and carry low to low-mid guitar gear. I'll buy picks, strings, straps, etc. from them. It never occurred to me to have them match a GC or online price until I read it on the Fender Lounge. I'll probably do that for my next big purchase and and wait for it to arrive from the manufacturer.

In San Diego, we used to cruise the pawn shops. It's as is, but you can find some crazy stuff at crazy prices.

My old neighborhood store was Cascio's in Milwaukee (they do business on the internet at www.interstatemusic.com).

They were (and are) great to deal with.

The world-famous Denmark Street, London!

Plus a couple of stores local to me.

I like Denmark Street for a browse, I remember when Rose-Morris used to have a shop there in the early '90's (South side of the street, just off of Charing Cross). Macari's on Charing Cross is good to look at too.

Nowadays, it's eBay mostly, though I really like Dave's Guitar Shop in LaCrosse, WI for new stuff, I've been doing business with them for about 12 years! Thing is though, is that the reasonably priced used guitar market has just about dried up. I need to check Craigslist more often.

There's just one Fender dealer close to me I believe, so that's where I shop. Rainbow Music....which just merged with another store, actually...

Jacksonville Guitar in Jacksonville, Arkansas!! 8) It is a small store, not a chain and has been a great help to me forever!! Excellent repair shop/service, and products. If they don't have it, they will find it for you and give a call when it comes in!! I don't like the chains so much, to big and impersonal, and to much to choose from or something, and they DO NOT give the musicians discount (10% off) like J'Ville Guitar, found this out yesterday  I do go over to Guitar Center and get strings sometimes when I'm in that part of town and in a hurry. I live closer to J'Ville and know those folks for over 20 years now :)

I'm lucky to have two independent music stores in St. Cloud, MN: Bridge of Harmony, which is a Fender dealer, and Al's Music, which is a Godin dealer. BoH sells the higher quality guitars and amps, but Al's has a team of guitar and amp techs that's unbeatable.

There's also a Guitar Center in Maple Grove, which is only about 45 minutes away.

Mostly local or small chains (one I like has stores in 3 or 4 cities.)

But it depends what I'm shopping for--one is better for picks, another for strings.

If we're talking guitars or amps--it depends on what brands I'm considering.
No store carries them all.

Locally I go to Annie's Guitars and Drums (owned by Greg Allman's cousin) and Portman's Music. But I love MusiciansFriend and Guitar Center.
