So I have a variety of stomp boxes by the following manufactures:

BOSS
Ibanez
Wampler
Earthquaker Devices
MXR
CNZ Audio

If I unplug my pedal board power (no batteries installed) and then plug it back in, I get the following:

BOSS compressor is on
BOSS Octave Pedal is on
CNZ Audio delay pedal is on
Everything else defaults to off

So it doesn't seem like manufacturer has anything to do with it, since only 2 out of the 6 BOSS pedals default to "on".

I would think certain pedals like a compressor or delay make sense to default to "on", but the octave pedal?

Just curious, is there a way to change the default on/of behavior for any brand stomp Box?

Not that I have ever heard of.

One place to ask might be one of those custom pedalboard companies.
You know, the places that build monster effect systems where the pedals are all in drawers in a rack somewhere near the amp.
Those guys would know if there's a way because they would want every pedal to be "on" when the system is powered up.

Hopefully that at least steers you in the right direction.

Im guessing they go with what they think most people will want, and this octave pedal is just an oddball.

Yeah good idea if anyone would know they would.

Do they default the same way w/ a battery in place, whether used or not?

With batteries installed, it would be the same as always having them plugged in, so whatever you did last, that would be the current setting as long as you don't unplug the patch cables. I think if you did unplug the patch cables, it would go back to the default (or at least with BOSS pedals which automatically disconnect the battery when you remove the cables).

I could install batteries in all of them and still use the AC power, but I feel like I would probably forget to change out the batteries before they explode.

The thing that actually prompted the question was the octave pedal. Nothing like hitting that first chord with an OC-2 accidentally left on.
