Hi There!

My 60th anniversary Jazzmaster is playing up. when I'm not touching the guitar there is a very loud hum/buzz coming from the amp. The amp is a Blues Junior that I picked up today but I have tried the amp with many other guitars and no similar problem has occurred. whenever I touch a metal part of the guitar the noise stops. This leads me to believe that it is a grounding/earthing issue. Taken the guitar apart and then put it back together, this solved the issue for about 5-10 minutes and then the noise returned.

Any ideas?

Cheers, Theo.

I'd say you're probably on the right track.
My first thought is ground issues.
Open it up again and look closer would be my advise.

I tend to believe the problem is with your Jazzmaster, perhaps, at the input jack or it could be a limited shielding situation; but, these things are never pleasant to troubleshoot as they can be intermittent, etc. I doubt the following is your problem, but, have you tried another cable and are the ends secure or loose? Is there any A/C cord running alongside in close proximity of your guitar cable? It’s always best (if at all possible) to separate A/C from your other cables, but if you have to cross them, not written in stone, it’s best at close to a 90° angle. This will help to prevent current causing interference. Is your wall outlet grounded? I have a few older installed ones that came with the house that can cause hum momentarily in speakers, and then it disappears for some time. I’ve known static electricity to play havoc with racks and equipment until you break the connection by touching the rack while getting that infamous static shock. :P

I think BMW-KTM likely has the better answer. Check and double check.

Good luck. Let us know what you find when you correct it, Strandox. TIA

FSB

Yah.
You're right, FSB.
When it comes to ground troubles there are a ton of possibilities.

Hi Strandox how loud is "very loud"? if I'm not mistaken the Jazzmaster is single coil p/ups. Running through a blues jr they will hum. (or any other amp for that matter but the jr may seem louder).

my strat does it as well "loud" being...audible, until I touch the strings etc. it would of course depend on volume settings of guitar and amp.

that is one of the benefits of "hum" bucker pickups. no hum.

just throwing out thoughts.

It wouldn't be because of single coils.
OP says when he touches metal it stops.

yeah that's true. I was thinking the "when I touch the strings (metal) it stops" kind of thing.
