I've decided I might try to play the harmonica. I haven't ever tried before, other than as a little kid with a toy.

I'm now presented with a choice of keys... which key is the most common for a beginner?

I don't think any key is the right key for a begginer. G is a common key for blues harp. It really just depends on the key of the songs your going to want to learn.

Why not start at the beginning with "A". When we used have jams out here the key that everyone played in was "A".

Not to completely ignore your suggestion, but I was thinking C might be easiest for me, transposition-wise.

I don't like instruments where you have a choice of keys...

If you check on eBay you can find complete sets for a reasonable amount of money.
I was looking at them a year or so ago.

If you look at beginner books most of them are for the key of C. G is the cross harp of C. So you could chose either. If you look at books it may help you decide.

I found a website (but do not remember what it was) that listed the Keys that Harmonicas come in from the lowest sounding to the highest sounding: They are:

G-A-B-C-D-E-F
