I'm trying to play Happy Birthday with the A minor pentatonic scale (ACDEG) and can't seem to get it to sound right.

Can you give me the tab for playing it in this scale?

I know it's a weird question but I'm trying to learn to apply scales and I'm having some starting problems.

I dont have the tab but "If you can hum it, you can play it-"
(I dont know who said that maybe David Moore)
Hum the song, note by note and then find it on the guitar.
This might help your ear training, so that you dont come to rely on the numbers and sybols more than you do your ear.
Hope this helps,

Perhaps you should consult the classical composer who wrote the opera in which that melody is sung!

In the key of A the notes for the melody go something like :

EEF#E AAb- EEF#BA- EE C# B A Ab F#- DD Db A B A

Don't let the flat symbol (b) confuse you. Good luck!

Actually: I'm confusing this with "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"
Search Wikepedia for the origins of both.

Doc :?

So I thought, as well. Seems he wrote variations on the theme.
Ref: Wikepedia :

I know know if you've ever heard Mozart's version (he wrote it, after all.), but he keeps doing version after version.

(I've been known to attend a symphony from time to time....(and when I do.....I drink wine with my pinky in the air.)

The advice about "if you can hum it you can play it" is well taken, but that's the root of my problem with the A-minor pentatonic scale.

The scale seems to be missing a couple of notes, so I can hum and play most of it, but I can't play some others without leaving the scale or striking an odd sounding note. Staying within the scale, I can't get it to sound right.

The objective here is that I learn to use a scale by humming and playing tunes, and I'm starting with Happy Birthday.
