I have a 1/2 sibling on the way and I was wondering... when should I start teaching him/her the instrument of their choosing? Comment and votes would be appreciated.

Personally, I feel its up to your sibling if he wants to learn, but if he's interested, then 4-7 yrs. is perfect. I've even heard of a group of musicians who started at that age and are actually pretty good. (Crooked-X, they're on Rockband, remember?)

Any age they want. It's usually somewhere around 10 when kids have the dexterity to actually get something out of it and enjoy the process.

3-7 years old, nice ages to teach 'em CLASSICAL MUSIC first, because classical music is the BASIC of music. (Well, I say that because in my country just a few person who want to learn classical. I don't know how is it in your place)

7-12 years old are the ages where they will search their place......

I voted for 4-7 because my youngest daughter started being interested in guitar about a year ago and is going to be going to lessons starting next month. She is 7 now.

I voted in the 8-10 range because I feel that they have more comprehension to work out strategies and develop "good" instead of bad habits, which can be hard to break.

I have a 6 yr old nephew who can't get used to picking downward and only picks upward. Not that there's anything wrong with with having your own style, but that's my answer, and I'm stickin' to it.

I know of twin girls who are under 10, and they play the piano. they started when they were like 4-5??? I voted in the 4-7 range because it seems then they have a really early start, which is always good. But ofcourse, they have to be mature at that age to want to play an instrument.

BTW, those afformentioned twins aren't all that great at piano IMHO. They've yet to learn improv. But they'll learn soon, they read notes better than i do... and i've played longer lol :o

We have spoke of this subject sometime before.

I have a nephew of 8 years who thinks he wants to play the guitar, but his attention span stinks.

I also have another nephew who is just 18 and he is just now learning the guitar. And of course the age span between these two nephews makes a big difference.

It all depends on the child.

I don't think it has to do with age, but more of the motivation and passion in learning! of course the earlier, the better!

Well, I'm 15, and I just started this year. I greatly wish that I had started a long time ago, I would be so much farther along. Start introducing the concept of guitars/bass, and then when he/she is mature enough to appreciate it, start the teaching process.

ANY day a person decides to get out there and play.

Children learn faster, adults are more appreciative of the gift of music.

If they can handle the instrument size, and age will do. I'm not a fan of starting someone out on a smaller version of a guitar or bass, and then having them change as they grow. Just my preference. Others have decent success with it.

I have found that with my kids, 8 and over worked best. My youngest is 11 now, and if he would only practice more, he'd be a star.....
