I thought this story might be one of interest to Fender fans and Hendrix fans alike. It was announced a few weeks ago, but I just came accross the info in The Fame Bureau website today.

Jimi's 1965 Stratocaster, the first to be burnt at a one time perfomance at the Finsbury Astoria in1967, to go up for auction in September. It is expected to fetch over $1million USD.

The Fame Bureau site:
http://www.famebureau.com/

Direct the the page about the Stratocaster in question:

The Strat:

Sorry, I can't seem to get the image attach to cooperate with me at the moment.

Oh, how I wish I had the money to buy such things...

Also, according to the Guitar and Bass Magazine website, the August issue contains the full story and great detail photos of the Hendrix Finsbury Astoria Burnt Strat. I am going to check stands for the issue this evening.

Enjoy!

The ultimate "heavy relic"!

Great story, though I can't help wondering how that poor thing would sound re-strung. (Probably just fine!)

$1 million...wow amazing, for a burnt guitar  . I have to save up for a new bass, someone going to buy this for a cool mil and never play it. Crazy world.

If you go to the news page there is link to a YouTube video showing the "investigation" of the Strat. The video is mostly a very poor audio quality chat with Tony Garland (Hendrix's press officer and holder of the burnt guitar), however there is a section of the video showing the guitar being re-strung. Also, the article states that the winning bidder of the Strat will also recieve "...a DvD of the Fame Bureau interview with him (Garland) and guitar experts and journalists from Guitar and Bass magazine, the ceremonial re-stringing of the guitar..." among other things.

I would be willing to bet that the Strat still sings, assuming all of the inner-workings are in-tact. :)

As I mentioned in the initial post, Guitar & Bass Magazine has an exclusive cover story on the Astoria Strat. I did manage to find a copy at a local Borders last night (it is a British publication and not as easy to find as I initially though - here in the US anyway). I have not made it through the whole article yet, but there are 14 pages of coverage telling the story of the '65 and lots of lovely photos.

Gutar & Bass Magazine's site:
http://www.guitarmagazine.co.uk/content/this.htm

Cheers!

That is just plain ridiculous.I would never pay $1,000,000 for a burnt Strat no matter who it belonged to or what song was written onit. What a complete waste of money.

On one hand I would tend to agree with you. However, I have seen people who have the means spend the money in far more foolish ways...

Personally, I would hope that, when all is said and done, the Hendrix Strat is purchased by or for purposes of being displayed somewhere - The Eperience Music Project in Seattle or the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum perhaps?

+1 There's something so inspiring just to be in the presence of the tools of the legends.
