Looking to purchase a burst 1963 strat with a body and back of neck and headstock ( had changed tuners previously ) professionally refinished as correct....guitar had been lightly sanded and varnished natural... ALL components are original including frets, 3 way switch, tuners, pick ups, pots, caps, tremolo, 5 springs, cover, truss rod, saddles & cover, output jack, pick guard ( minor crack in usual spot ) hard case is OK, date 2 SEPT 63B, 8/63 cavity... pockets were as original with correct paint. Straight neck and finger board is very nice original....WHAT SHOULD I PAY????? I know refinish reduces the price, but it seems like it is affecting the retail price less as time goes by and the availability of originals drys up.

An all-original sunburst '63 properly re-finished to its original spec? I am not an expert at all on what this would cost, but definitely "not cheap". As such you can file my response as "no help at all" ... LOL. But, boy, that sounds like an awesome guitar -- I can sure see why you are interested.

14th edition of the blue book say's, below $5500 for a guitar in fair condition.
A re-finish as you described as varnish wasn't an offering by Fender ever.
The replaced tuners being the only parts that are not original is very good.
If it had not been re-finished even w/ a little original paint the guitar was probably worth up to about $9500 in very good condition.

How much is it worth? I can’t say. Obviously, that depends on what the market will bear and who the buyer is.

Although, with some variation, I found this which may be of interest (for as long as the web page is available). Note the part about how it was finished.

I’m sure the Strat in question will vary in price like the length of a piece of string.
Like this in mint condition:

:P Then again . . .

https://artisanguitars.com/pre-owned-19 ... sh-id-9781

and so on and so on.

That being said, and my not being an expert, as sfceric mentioned $5500 for a refinished ‘63 Strat, that could be a fair price, I suppose, considering 1963 original finished Strats in 3TSB are certainly out there, and they demand a high to ridiculous price. IMHO. Rare colour and/or previous ownership/association would bring even more. There are certain craftsmen that have earned respect for refinishing as well, although this is not always a factor, but has been. Correct finish material and application for the period speaks for itself. I believe 14 Fender colours, common in the early 60s, were possible (at least with custom included); but, more to the point, it’s the availability now that counts.

Others here may be able to verify or change the previous quote accordingly.

Let me tell you a quick true story that I heard many years ago. A dealer in Toronto got an estate Rolls Royce for a song. He priced it to make a quick flip. His salesmen could not make the sale at a ridiculous low price even though the Rolls was sound. A month went by with no sale, and because, even with checkups, customers failed to believe the car was in decent shape at the going price, the dealer raised the price substantially and it sold almost as fast as the price change. :P
Sometimes, a good deal is difficult to see, even when it’s In front of you. I’ve seen lots of those over the years.

In the end, if it’s a player and checks off most of the desired boxes, and gives you the mojo, you’ll know what you’ll be comfortable with, just as the seller knows what he’ll be comfortable with. If it’s just for investment, consider it like any other investment. Cautiously. Nothing is certain.
Good luck with that piece of history, RSDlugosJr. :D
