First time post and need some expert advice. I just acquired a 1964 mustang. At some point in it's history, it was painted a dark grey - and it's not the best paint job.

What would you do if you owned it?
Leave it as is or have it repainted to it's original red, white or blue? If you'd repaint it, does anyone recommend someone who could do a as "close-to-original" paint job?

Also interestingly and confusingly, this mustang has a red tortoise shell pick guard, but the pickups and switches are black. The tortoise pick guard made me think it was originally white, but the pickups and switches on those were white.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

If it's a "do-it-yourself" paint job done by someone that had no idea what they were doing (and in fact as ugly as you describe)...first, I would have the guitar authenticated before I spent the (approximant) $250 to $400 on a professional paint job. If it indeed authenticates to a 1964 Fender Mustang, I wouldn't hesitate to have it done properly.

I would use these guys: http://www.guitarpaintguys.com/index.html simply because they are near me, and have a decent reputation. Only thing I don't care for about them is you HAVE to ship the guitar body to them even if you can easily drive there...because apparently they don't have a "store front" for "insurance purposes".

Again, we'd have to see pics to decide what our advice should be.

You see, some refinishing jobs are lousy, but some others just add character to the guitar. It's part of its history.

But in a sum, if the paint job is ok, I'd leave it alone. If you REALLY don't like it, then try to restore it to the original color, if you can find out what it was.

Yes, it is wood and not metal; but, automotive paint is not new to Fender.

I’d be interested in knowing if anyone has experience with a good auto body painter. With the right facilities, and the right painter (Who knows? Maybe, the guy is a guitar buff or maybe he’d take it on as a challenge.) possibilities are there.

One might be able to save money prepping it before it goes to the booth.

Welcome, kkova.

Who is "we", and "our"? I can give 'advice' and/or opinion with or without pictures...I do it all the time in real life.
There are times when pictures are helpful, there are times when pictures are necessary, and there are times when pictures are nice. But "we" don't always have to have a picture to answer a question.
