A few questions about pick-ups and electronics:

When a pick-up is refered to as "hot", what does that mean? Is it just louder?

Other than the lack of hum and size, what's the difference between single coil and humbuckers? Tone wise.

I see where people upgrade their pots and jack, how does the quality of these items affect tone?

The reason I ask is because I recently bought a Squier Strat(HSS) to play with. I know the electronics on the Squiers are considered the weak link, and thought it would make a good project. Nothing beats diving head first into something in the quest of knowledge.

Yeah when something is hot, it means louder and clearer, all around better sounding.

Single coils have a brighter and cleaner tone, which is why people who play country use them. on distortion, they produce a bright distortion that cuts through. HUmbuckers have a grittier sound, and sound 'fatter' compared to single coils. ON distortion, it's great for metal, and it's higher output than a single coil.

Replacing pots and jacks may give better connection between the guitar and amp, but i'm not too sure.

i prefer single coils because i like a bright tone. And yeah, go ahead and mess around with that strat! no sorrow if you mess it up, right?

I respectfully disagree...
A pickup is hotter does not always mean it is "clearer" or "all around better sounding".
In fact, if a pickup is too hot it actually looses frequencies & note clearity.
Trust me when I say this, there is as balance between output & tone.

You should visit the Fender Pickups and Accessories area, where there are some real experts in this area, such as SMark, that have helped many with pickup related questions.

Good luck.
