I consider the guitar and the amp a unit, with the amp being about 60% of the important stuff in that unit, and the guitar about 40%. How do you characterize the amp/guitar relationship?

It's interesting that you place a large percentage on the amp. I would agree with you, though not 60%. Effects also greatly enter into the equation when they are used.

Only amp and guitar factored: 60%amp, 40% guitar

How I really see it: 85% Hands of player, 10% amp, 5% guitar.

What about where you attack the strings? Near the bridge? Near the neck?

Just factoring the results so far, the consensus is forming to be 51% amp, 49% guitar. This is after excluding factors that are not guitars or amps.

Reportedly, back some decades ago, someone stood in awe of Chet Atkins playing a Country Gentleman and remarked how beautiful the guitar sounded.

Mr. Guitar reportedly took his hands from the instrument and asked, "How good does it sound, now?"

And the great Ry Cooder likes cheap guitars and beater cars.

I think the amp is more important, about 60%.
