I see that guitar legend and country music great Roy Clark has passed.

One of my favorites of his was this rendition of Midnight Cowboy from an episode of Hee Haw playing a 12 string Burns:

Thanks, for the post OL. Good timing as I just heard the news on the radio. I was a huge Roy Clark fan at an early age.

Pretty tough to pick just one of this legend’s best performances. If I were to pick several this would definitely be included.

Montoya, Segovia, Feliciano, Charo, and others (even me modestly and not worthy) play Malagueana. The only thing in common with me and Roy was the love of music and a twelve string guitar.

This was one of the most asked for tunes in his toolbox and here you can see and hear why.

But, he could play any genre and sang some really good hits too. So I leave with a “Thanks, Roy” for the good times. A guitarist’s guitarist that will be missed.

Well, another part of my childhood just died. When I was a kid (I've also seen them play the old episodes on RFD,) I used to watch "Hee Haw" all of the time. I think that's where I learned how to compose songs, from listening to those country songs. My parents also had his records, since my dad was a country music fan. He was one hell of a player. RIP, Roy. :(

Roy's passing get's me a bit sad. I always liked watching Buck Owens, and Roy Clark on Hee Haw. Pickin' and Grinnin'.
RIP Roy.

Oh so sad, like a lot of the older folks here, I too used to watch "Hee Haw" and his playing was always a highlight of the show. I did get to see him live when I was young at some country music concert when I was living in Washington state, I do believe Buck was there also. He was quite the picker he will be missed
RIP Roy

RIP Roy...what a talented musician. I remember him well from Hee Haw but didn't appreciate just how phenomenal a player he was until I got older. Wish I had had a chance to see him perform.

A correction to my initial post, the 12 string Roy is playing was actually a "Baldwin." The Baldwin piano folks wanted to get into the electric guitar craze so they bought the British firm "Burns" and moved production to Arkansas. This did not last long and production ended very soon along. I memory serves me all this is correct.

I wonder if Roy playing the Baldwin was part of a promotion or just the guitar he wanted to play.

That was an easy one to miss. When I saw it, Burns came to mind as they have similar characteristics for sure. That’s because, except in name, they are basically one in the same as this article shows:

Note the CBS/Fender connection and the Country celebrities involved.
https://uniqueguitar.blogspot.com/2009/ ... s.html?m=1

That could be how Roy got involved with the use and/or promotion.

When I had just started trying to play the guitar, I told the person who was coaching me that I thought my fingers might be too big to play. He laughed and said "If Roy Clark can tear up the fret board with those fat sausage fingers he's got, anybody can play guitar".

I will never forget that.

I have liked Roy Clark since I was 9 or 10, I will miss him. :(

His talent was far from "hidden"...you could see it every Sunday in the States. The man could play ANYTHING with strings on it (and some things without strings...Accordion and Harmonica come to mind), and was just as good with any instrument he picked up.
