I enjoyed the South Pole station tour, vinyl. Thanks.

I thought I was brave tackling weather that brought us to 50+F below this winter. Obviously, I was sadly mistaken. If it were me in that environment I’d wear two toques, and two of everything, maybe more.

In the 60s I heard that bush pilots, reportedly, have been known to drain their oil, heat it up (perhaps, earlier with a sterno can no longer available AFAIK), and then pour it back into the engine. I wonder if a similar process is needed in the South Pole and/or if block heaters are common as they are in this neck of the woods or if formulas have changed for the better benefiting the operation in that remote area.

All in all - pretty cool, 8)

0°C / 32°F right now.

Thanks FSB,

I don't think the Sterno trick works there. If you want to go there it's pretty much you have to go between November and March.

When I was still working, I was on an interview panel via telephone because the connection was too slow to do Skype. That candidate came to work for us, so that's how I learned "a little" about what it's like there. He spent 13 months there and had the same job as the guy who did the video.
He had some real interesting stories about life there. The day we interviewed him he said it was -47F, but just a few days previous to that it was -73F. Never did ask if that was actual or wind chill temps but he did talk about replacing a piece of 12GHz waveguide at the one of the satellite dishes which they had to machine from a solid block of aluminium. He said he could only work about 8 minutes in the "heated" space under the radome without gloves. When it was possible to trek the 3/4 mile outside.

Just another example of you know what you know, you know what you don't know, and you don't know what you don't know.

Cheers,

That satellite dish was interesting, vinyl. Thanks, for the great story. I know a little about satellite relay and troubleshooting dropped or missing signals across borders and overseas as I coordinated with associates. It just takes a little rain to dampen the signal at times.

I don’t believe it’s mature enough for this type of communication yet, but passing and receiving data via laser light may bring connection from the South Pole to a better place. The principle works somewhat now, and NASA is amongst the early adapters.

8°C/46°F here today

South Pole today -41° feels like -56°

We use laser light for communication now, it's just through fiber optic cables rather than "through the air". It's now possible to use more than one wavelength of light in one fiber. Let me say here that I'm talking about low infrared light, not visible to humans. Much like terrestrial microwave the signal has to received, then regenerated every 30 miles or so.(because of the curvature of the earth, terrestrial microwave can go farther if you get the signal high enough above ground level,(Hope you're not a flat earther) but doesn't have the bandwidth of light.

Rain fade is a problem for radio satellite communications as any one who gets tv that way will attest to. I imagine clouds and rain will be a similar problem for laser communications like NASA is experimenteting with.

So to stay on topic here, it's currently 63˚F here.

A bit of trivia, the science station uses New Zealand time. At the geographical South Pole you can literally walk through all the time zones in less than a minute.

In relation to my earlier comment about you don't know what you don't know, I didn't know what a toque was before I came here.

Cheers,

30 degrees, with a wind chill of 18 degrees. Some snow, too. It's supposed to be spring, but winter won't piss off.

Pretty cool about the the concentrated time zones in the South Pole.

Hang in there, Paul. If last summer is any indicator global warning is just around the corner.

Nah, here in Georgia (pronounced Jaw-ja) we're just a bunch of rednecks (pronounced deplorables) that lack sophistication. Pretty much why we're a "red" state.

69ºF here right now.

Hmm. Must be a lot of Jaw-ja deplorables here because we have a lot of barbecues, fishing, whiskey, cola, and red necks in hunting camo suits too. The others wear golf shirts in the winter, but they aren't very good at hitting that little ball. :P Heck, I even joined a Wildlife club thinking it was about all night parties. Then I found out everyone went to bed early to get a before sun up start for the cold damp woods and misty lake. So much for that warm welcome. Although, when it rained we’d head back to the cottage and party,

Things get confusing because on this side of the border rednecks are blue and those in left field are red. I think it’s trickery and a collusion for world order to get us all to drive self driving solar powered electric golf carts wearing camo and toques.
Ah, yes. Spring and summer - gotta love it.

-8°C / 17°F Crazy weather. Expecting 30°F today and 50° Wednesday. 40s for the rest.
