44 degrees, with a wind chill of 41 degrees. I think we might be finally getting some warmer weather.

24°F / -4°C but toasty under the covers. :D
A big front end loader came and took our shoulder height snowpiles away from our boulevards today. Haven’t seen the ground for months. The front yard and back yard are waist deep in snow and we all are hoping no flooding will occur from it. Parts of the province may (as in Minnesota and North Dakota 69 miles away) see some major flooding as the melt continues and waterways like the Red River flood.

Gonna be in the 50'sF today, and 40'sF the rest of the week, with a chance of rain each day through Sunday.
Couple that with all the snow melt (we got record snows in Iowa this winter), and we are looking at bad flooding.
We are under a Flood Watch through Sunday in two-thirds of the state.

Floods are never welcomed and I hope Iowa and plenty of others don’t have a rough time of it, but it looks to be potentially worse this year, White Dog.

One thing that adds to the severity is that, with a few exceptions, states are smaller than our provinces and territories so while we are more likely to have repeat damage from weather than not, we have the advantage of spreading out the infrastructure to handle it, if that makes any sense. This is the land of Zambonis and lakes. Where a third or half of the province would get flooded that could easily mean a whole state.

On the other hand, a flood or other event could cover a larger area in a province. We might get a tornado like the largest F5 in Canada 20 miles from here and it may not cause the destruction as in the states south of us. Hurricanes on the eastern seaboard would be the same. So in some, but not all, situations with weather severity, location and population plays a big part. That goes for westcoast earthquakes too. I think that is also a comparison in matters like climate change. More damage and casualties in LA and SanDiego would lessen the increase in quakes of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest? Nope. The severity in California? Nope.

Let’s say one state doesn’t have a typical weather pattern that neighbouring states have. It would seem strange to share in the weather pattern suddenly, whereas it really isn’t that much of stretch if you use the province scenario. Where one lives and how severe the change is can be relative. If it’s bad to begin with, more of the same could be severe. IMHO.

Approximately 70.8% of the earth is ocean. Changes come and go, and if you are in or by the ocean you’ll eventually see and feel a difference. Most will not. What are the odds? Pretty good I would say.

We are no strangers to floods here, but with the majority population living here in the ‘Peg this was one of the best solutions to at least handle some of it:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Floodway

However, with added rainfall we can still see flooding to a lesser degree, and with another diversion west of us large Lake Winnipeg takes the overflow and lakeside properties have suffered over the years, and that has been addressed somewhat.

Still, a floodway/diversion seemed to be the better solution as most would agree.

Same thing with forest fires, etc. Add a larger or concentrated population stateside and that doesn’t help. Last year BC wildfires burnt twice the size of California. The difference was the population and, unlike our neighbours to the south, no lives were lost this time. It is said within 20 years that result could change to be like California. If it weren’t for BC forest management and intentional burn off, matters would be worse right now.

Climate change or not, you can’t fool with Mother Nature.

-6°F / -21°C

Anybody remember the Brockabrella?

50 degrees and rain, thank you but it's a weather rollercoaster (sort of like my youtube channel MrSolarcoaster)

That 'Floodway' is a great idea...but would never fly here in Iowa specifically, because they (Government) would have to take land from farmers...and farmers wouldn't have it for two reasons:

1). To farmers here; land is a "tradition". We have 'Century Farms' all over the state---that means the farm (and land) has been handed down through generations for more than a Century. It's pretty sacred, and the Government realizes that. So farmers will not give up their land without a fight, and they stick together like a small Army.

2). Most of them don't get too upset if their crops are destroyed by floods because the Government (which actually means all of us tax payers) as well as private Insurance, pay the farmers for their destroyed crops anyway.

Of course the Government can (and have) force the farmers to give up their land at a price that they (Government) decides to pay...but then the farmer gets one lump payment for that piece of property, rather than a yearly income.
Farmers hold a lot of power in the U.S. (Iowa in particular, are top producers in corn, soybeans, and pork---I think Nebraska has us beat on beef) because they are essentially "feeding the world".

Any way; on topic, I believe it's 36 degrees right now...heading to 45 by early afternoon.

Gotcha on the power of the farmers, White Dog. I’ve been to Iowa and. as a kid, I remember trucked corn piled high for a fire to change the price on the market. Iowa and Manitoba have a similar background with grain and hog history. Here the Voyageurs and Hudson Bay outposts supported farmers and likewise. Canola (from the words Canada and oil) came from the university down the street. Hutterite colonies along with others give us über pig feeding farms that made this province a major pork provider. Add former stockyards, a major train yard, and a commodity exchange. Well, you get the idea. Still the floodway got built.

I remember an interview with a Missouri farmer asked why he wouldn’t leave the flood behind after repeated punishment. He said, “Are you crazy? We are the world’s bread basket and this land is the most fertile.”

Yet, just like soya, corn of which Iowa is a major player, is everywhere it should and shouldn’t be. That gives Iowa clout for sure. Don’t get me started on that topic. Sticking to the original topic, some of the food industry gives me the chills and burns me up. :P
