27 degrees now, with a wind chill of 14 degrees, and 30 MPH. It's going down to 7 degrees, with a wind chill down as low as -7 degrees, according to National Weather Service. I like to check there, because there's no advertising and padding the weather report to make it seem worse than it is for ratings, like you'd typically get with TV networks.

You might have something there, Paul. One thing you do have is pretty cold weather for your neck of the woods. Here, when it's not winter, they broadcast 30% chance of rain when it's more convenient. I remember my buddy who flies for Air Canada about to check his flight plan and weather when I suggested he needn't bother. When he asked why, I told him it was 30% chance of rain before he found that to be the case. Sort of like breaking news only it's broken weather.

We're up to 6* F but the windchill is brutal. By Wednesday should be in the 40s
and possibly rain.

Check this out: https://www.newportri.com/news/20190121 ... 00-locally Yeah, it's 5 degrees outside, and I have no hot water or heat. Luckily, we still have power, and we bought an extra electric heater, and also a hot plate, since we also don't have a working stove, so I don't have to use just the microwave. Taking a cold shower was fun, though. That was "invigorating." :P

Sorry to see that problem with your water and heat, Paul. Things here are, for the most part, different than many parts of the U.S. when it comes to energy. While we do import some from your side of the border it’s reciprocated and has more to do with seasonal needs and trade agreements.

For the most part Canada has plenty of energy and in this province hydro electricity and natural gas are very plentiful as in other parts of the country. The biggest difference between us is how much private industry controls the distribution of your essential resources. Here (with very little exception) the governments, both provincial and local, own and manage the electricity, gas, and water. With just 10 provinces and 3 territories that makes it very manageable. The problem is that typical government mismanagement lurks, especially when we have more than we need.

Some privatization has occurred, but it is rare, although, there is always the possibility and push by investors. Looking at California, for example, privatization has proven to be flawed in the past. YMMV Meanwhile, we do pretty well here. There are a lot less players, money is not divvied up so much, and shared operation and resources are easier.

That said, we’ve had and are hoping again to install a fireplace should the electricity fail. The furnace is useless with no electricity. I haven’t discovered a piezo electric alternative for that as of yet.

We’ve had waterlines in the neighbourhood freeze where neighbours run a hose between houses. The fix makes a mess and it takes months for thaw and repair if it happens. We’ve been lucky since the outdoor waterline sprung a leak this summer and the city repaired it in warm weather.

Never any gas problems. Good luck, Paul. I hope you two have it all back together soon. Nice to have a toque, huh?

-15°F today. :D

I'm just glad it's not worse in the fact we do have electricity, and this didn't happen in a blizzard. I've been in a situation here when there was a blizzard, and we had no power for almost two days, with the only thing working was gas, and hot water. At least with this, we can use electric space heaters, which was pretty effective for sleeping, and of course we have can carry out our normal day, and not have anything to do, other than playing Monopoly and Backgammon by candlelight and LED lanterns. :P

I do believe they have 1000 workers here going through the 7100 homes that don't have gas, and have the National Guard deployed for whatever they need them for, and what they are doing is going house to house, shutting off the gas valves, or whatever that is, then they will come back and turn everything on, and check out everything involved with it.

They already fixed the main issue with the supply, and they are doing this as a safety precaution. They don't want any houses exploding like what happened in Massachusetts a while back. The good news is that they've already shut ours off, so we're in the head of the queue to get it turned back on, so maybe within the next couple of days, or hopefully sooner, it will be back on. Our Chinese restaurant that we frequent has gas, so at least we got that, too, which is nice, as well.

I tell you, I'll never take anything for granted like having hot water in the wintertime for granted, not that I did in the first place.

Glad to hear you have the baseboard heating, Paul. Monopoly and Backgammon are a great way to pass the time. Mrs. FSB won’t play Monoploy with me. In the 60s I and some university students attempted to break the world record by sleeping in a mall and taking shifts keeping a game going by running around for extra game money as we needed. We broke the existing record; but, word leaked out and another university in the States caught wind of it, and while we quit (thinking it was in the bag) they played for a few more hours and snatched the winning game from us.
You can never be too cautious with gas. In our old house we had a gas stove and gas oven which was great. In this one we had a gas leak when the furnace was newly installed and with both a gas dryer and gas water heater nearby we were lucky to discover it soon enough as my better half smelled the odor before I did. We now use an induction stove which works similar to gas in some ways, but is safer.

I know what you mean, Paul, by taking things for granted. Not having toilet facilities can be difficult so I have a stand by camping toilet that gets us through the crap  if water is shut down.

Take care, stay safe and warm, and enjoy the Chinese food.
