I am the son of a Korean war veteran who earned a purple heart. dad never said much about his service, just that he felt it was his duty. seems to me that is true of veterans- they did it for our country.

I am old enough to remember how horrible viet nam vets were treated on their return home. a very bad way to treat people who put their lives on the line.

this grateful American say a great big thank you. to those who gave their life, bless you. to those who made it home-welcome back. to those still serving-please stay safe, and know we are praying for you.

I was just thinking of the comradeship shared with servicemen around the world.

I lived in a city that hosted (and still does) ships like the Cole, famous carriers. assault ships, submarines, and more. We've hosted Navy seals who snuck unannounced into our inner harbour with our local Navy diving school, and we’ve seen our streets and clubs packed with sailors and marines on their trips to and from ‘Nam in the ‘60s or Pearl in peacetime. I grew up with the Blue Angels making regular flypasts; but, I also paid visits to Whidbey in Washington, Treasure Island in California, Norfolk in Virginia, and Portsmouth in England to name a few destinations. Often we’d rub shoulders with foreign servicemen on leave at Panama.

I just want to thank the USO and their staff for being there for all of us, including this Canuck when walking a strange town, being offered a welcomed hand and conversation, a
hot cup of coffee or soft drink, a snack, a stretch out on a chair or sofa, perhaps, a cigarette or a few, and then there’s the entertainment if only a pool table or tv. NAAFI were on the English
docks to meet us with treats, a beverage, and guidance for exploring the neighbourhood after our 10 day voyage across the Atlantic.

Then we were always welcome in the base clubs and ships of our brothers from another country. I remember my first Heineken on a Netherlands minesweeper, a psychedelic band in ‘67 on base in San Francisco, the rockin’ Tiki Club on Whidbey.Island, and more.

I’m glad I got to meet the Vets and servicemen, and those who support us. We are more alike than different, and I’m happy to call you friends, and I hope you enjoyed and enjoy your visits here too, You are always welcome. Thank you, for your service.

- Gary.

Absolutetly. They served their country.

Many of my contemporaries served in Vietnam. Some of them no choice, they were drafted.
Some of them didn't end up in Vietnam necessarily. But they still came back with an addiction to heroin, or some other issue.

I can only add my agreement to Phreddybee's comments. I'd like to add to those who made it home, a huge thank you, we care about you, and we appreciate you and your sacrifice.

To the ones that didn't make it home an even bigger thank you. I know that seems lame.We will never be able to express our gratitude to you.
