Well said, Rich and FSB. My brother served in the United States Marine Corps, in Vietnam. He was not the same when he returned home after serving for four years. He was successful, for a time, but ended up drinking himself to death at age 40. He was a very tough one and wouldn't want sympathy but it's so sad what our fine young men and women go through. It just shouldn't be.

Sorry to hear of your brother, Marky. Heavy drinkers after the war(s) has a history of being common, sometimes with comrades and sometimes alone, and this pattern has carried over to many service clubs which these days, at least in this country, are now struggling to stay active. So much so that government funding has recently been announced in some provinces. Society has changed, but, sadly, individual crutches and addictions still exist.

So many of our servicemen are young and, unfortunately, they are easily led to that over-indulging alchohol/drug lifestyle before they are controlled by it to the extent it stays with you in your older years. The drugs can be introduced in a similar fashion, but abusive prescriptions are more often the problem. Some are self inflicted, and some are from habit forming medication. These issues are not just amongst the young, nor are they just amongst the men and women in the forces. It also affects families.

We speak of support after the damage is done. I think we need support right from the beginning before and after. Most of all we need those in the services, like your brother Marky, to come forward, if nothing else, to at least share their story. In addition we need others who can make a difference to listen and to act. These vets are our investment in the present and for the future. They gave us our past, they contribute to society, and they are our protectors. In reality they have names, and each one is much more, certainly worthy of care and attention. It also helps to know that support will be available while facing danger on the job.

The other option is trading places or worse. I think, instead of taking up the option, it is a great deal and smart to provide what these men and women need.

The eleventh hour, eleventh day of the eleventh month (that being November 11th.) 1918 was the end of the Great War WW I.

A day of memory is an annual event held on November 11th each year. It may have a different name or tradition honouring our men and women who chose to serve and protect. It varies amongst countries. It’s Remembrance Day for Canada, and Veterans’ Day for the USA and both share names and similar observations with other countries. Some nations have their own name and/or date in which to do the honours. Some honour the dead only, others honour the fallen and the living, but not necessarily on the same day. It can be confusing, but one thing is clear. The sentiment is, arguably, the same.

However the day is commemorated, when and if it is yours to remember, to those who serve(d), I salute all who gave selflessly to protect in time of need.

Freedom comes at a price. The least we can do is pay with respect our
eternal thanks to not only our own, but to friends and allies across borders. For those who have passed I wish them peace. For those who remain, I wish peace as well.

I would love to see lasting peace in the world as the ultimate final payment for the privileges and gifts that our protectors gave us in their hope that we may have a chance to make a difference.

Noted and corrected thanks, Arjay. I wasn’t there on that date.

Actually, I got the wrong date because it was in the year 1919 that Armistice Day was first observed at Buckingham Palace. So thanks for catching that faux pas.

As a former veteran, I understand the needs of veterans, and have been clear - we will work together, stand together with the Administration, but we will also question their policies when they shortchange veterans and military retirees.

I had the honor of serving veterans for many years while employed at the Phoenix VA Medical Center (Carl T. Hayden) as an X-ray/CT Tech. I saw much deeper wounds than their physical ones. My thanks and prayers go out to all veterans.

You, Marky, and others make some very important points on veterans’ care (or the lack of) and concerns, Mike.

Having served alongside WWII, Korean, and modern day vets throughout the 60s, and having close contact with my British and American colleagues, I am well aware of the service and many of the issues that are inherited. As a base kid, I lived next door to numerous heroes including POWs, spies, commandos, and what have you. My neighbour had scars on his back from capture and being baked in a wooden fruit box in the Pacific. Even my school was named after a war hero, but the base name changed because of political correctness as is the trend with historical figures.

My father was my hero. I have his wartime snap shots that include the terrible before and after brutal action taken on both sides of a famous U-boat ramming and, at the age of 17, there is his standing as honour guard, rifle at the ready, in the foreground of a related burial of one of his mates at sea. The War didn’t end for him there, and long story short, he carried many emotions and hid them throughout his service career into the late 60s.

Dad missed out on benefits from lack of knowledge and no approach from the government. When I discovered this missed opportunity three years ago and applied on her behalf, my mother, this 111th Wren (same as the Waves in the U.S. Navy) who chased subs from a Catalina flying boat, not only received some benefit back pay acknowledgment for her service, but Veterans’ Affairs here in Canada more than supported her including the acceptance of her stay at the age of 95 into the Veterans’ Care home facility; but, that’s another story both good and bad. Those working on behalf of the Vets are outstanding IMHO. My mother passed two months ago, 9 months after entering the home, and they had a wall of honour and flag at half mast for her. She had been honoured many times before including with a march past at a military college.

My father-in-law and the original owners of many of my neighbours’ homes were fortunate to be able to buy (not receive) houses that were built for them with government support just after their service in the second world war. With Air Force, Navy, and until recently a large Army base, all in the city limits, this is very much a military town. My wife was raised in this renovated home in which we now gratefully live.

I am applying, as my nephew did and is coaxing me to do, for a card that allows me some Veteran perks that include discounted shopping, travel, groceries, insurance, and such. Apparently, these are not just fluff. I have no need for more, and am still thankful for the kind couple in Fort Lauderdale that anonymously picked up the cost of my meal in 1967 while my ship was berthed across the way.

So, I consider myself very fortunate. I give back when I can, but that is not enough. I know those who protect us today do not get the parades and benefits that others had or, perhaps, should have had, and most of all today’s servicemen are not getting the care, attention. and support so much deserved. Having spoken with these kids, I know wars and skirmishes are quite different today and their needs are just as important, if not more in some ways, as are their family needs before, during, and after. The public needs an education in my estimation. Because it doesn’t reach them, I think the matter is incorrectly downplayed.

I experienced love and hate for the military in the 60s whether it was love and hate from the beautiful people or love and hate from those with a political streak. The rest are complacent or oblivious. I think that hasn’t changed. The players have. On Mike’s Administration point (same elsewhere): Strange that the 60s unpopular and popular parties then, including the hawks, have made a reversal with supporters and protestors changing hats? Hmm. Confusing, huh? I bring this up because it has a direct affect on how Vets are treated on the priority list. Awarded when there is an advantage, ignored when it alters public opinion. I now question motivations of service differently, but have no less respect for those who choose that path. I only question decisions from illustrious leaders, and look at past and present events on how and why we got and get there. Not simply on when. That’ll never change.

Questions of why we serve changes with age and knowledge, but those who serve are always there for us, and we should always be there for them. They have all or no political leanings. They are sons, daughters. mothers. fathers, husbands/boyfriends, wives/girlfriends, uncles, aunts, every human colour, and much more. They are us and help to prevent us from becoming them. There’s a lesson there.

If you meet a Vet and know where or how to get support . . . pass it on. Most of all, make a difference if you can.

Embrace the day.
