I just watched a news story that said, after a few years of trials, Harley Davidson is going electric big time! 0-60 in 4 seconds. Awesome. Not surprising if you ever had electric or slot cars as a kid. Others like Victory, Zero, and Ducati, amongst many are in the electric motorcycle game, but the Hog is iconic.

The artificial sound is being compared to a jet engine. I assume it has high pitches and is constant. I wonder if hearing loss will be an issue. Perhaps, not.

It claims 100 - 130 miles before a 30 minute recharge. That’s 50 - 65 miles one way on a return trip providing you don’’t go off the trail. That would make a total of 10 trips on our main avenue here or 5 one way return trips.

Crossing this country is 3,365 miles give or take without driving around. That’s a lot of charging, and a need for a lot of stations compared to fill ups. Let’s hope there isn’t a line up while waiting for a trickle charge to complete during a trip. The same holds true in a city. You can’t carry a jerrycan to the bike. Phtt! It reminds me of those toy cars and bikes that needed batteries changed just when you were havin’ fun, but there weren’t any to be had.

That said. It’s a great concept for now, and as long as it’s in your backyard it’ll do good for a grocery run. IMHO.

Note: A buddy of mine traded his Harley for a beautiful new Indian. He and his son recently put on over 3000 miles and he said he was always pulling off the highway to refuel while his son didn’t have the need to. Imagine doing that with the electric even as it improves. Mind you he might catch up with the gas bike in parts on the side of the highway.

This is my “Born To Be Wild” electric choice:

True that it sucks for long trips.

But I think most people don't spend all day in the saddle. 150 miles is a real nice long ride on a weekend afternoon. More than enough for a commute to work.

And in many places, motorcycles sit in the garage all winter long. No need to add fuel stabilizer or drain the tank.

In some ways, electric motorcycles make more sense than electric cars.

There are definite advantages for sure, but it’s hard to compete with success (pollution aside). The 100 millionth one of these was produced in 2017. It was the first bike (approx, 200 miles a tank) under my butt and in my hands in ‘64, and it’s still being made.

And now using a standard plug and 2 swappable batteries, and no more pollution, this is a city bike without the mileage of the Harley AFAIK. You won’t look like Peter Fonda, but you won’t on a Harley either. :D

For those long trips and short stops this may be the answer:

Those little red Honda ultra-quiet 1,000 watt generators will run for 7 or 8 hours on a half-gallon of gas.
I think I would try to figure out how to mount one behind the seat, where a trunk would go on a touring rig, and let it charge while you ride.
I'm guessing if it worked you could get maybe 800 miles per gallon.

Just an idea ....

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hey! Great idea, Matt. I can run the Honda mower on fumes when I want to empty the tank before snowfall.
Don’t get me wrong about electric versus gas motorcycles. Aside from my age abilities, there are some mighty nice machines of the gas variety that I’d take in a flash, but most come with an open check book that never closes.

I’m waiting for a Kneivel jump with an electric. Now that would be sumpin’. 8)

Glad you liked them, SBLS. It looks like they’ll keep coming and the competition will be fierce. Let’s hope they can keep up with the support and service.

Here’s some others. There’s plenty on the Internet and soon to be more coming to your neighbourhood. :P
