After a successful year touring as The Devon Allman Project with special guest Duane Betts, the sons of Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts are joining forces to form The Allman Betts Band.

The new ABB includes Devon Allman, Duane Betts, Berry Oakley Jr. (son of original Allman Brothers Band bassist Berry Oakley), Johnny Stachela (slide guitar) and Devon Allman Project percussionists R. Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow) and John Lum.

They will kick off 2019 with a new Allman Betts Band album and a Worldwide tour that will feature new music, songs from their solo projects and classic Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman tunes in honor of the 50th Anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band. The new album, slated for release in the Spring of 2019, will be recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and will be produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Prine and Elvis Presley). Former Allman Brothers Band keyboardist and current Rolling Stones keyboardist, Chuck Leavell will guest on the new album with Peter Levin (Gregg Allman's keyboardist) handling keyboard duties for the rest of the record.

The Allman Betts Band will launch a World Tour in March and perform throughout 2019 at festivals, theaters and historic venues.

"The Allman Betts Band will launch a World Tour in March and perform throughout 2019 at festivals, theaters and historic venues." If they just started how are they playing festivals?

Sounds interesting. If they are anything like their parents, then it should be some good jams. 8) I imagine being the offspring of said musicians would also put extra pressure on them, since they have to carry the legacy of the name.

Greg Allman's autobiography was really harsh on Dicky Betts and almost everyone else he ever knew. I am not sure if Greg was such a nice guy.

Hope these children of the Gods can get along better.

I think so, but you decide.

Thanks again, Mike. I have it bookmarked for my evening viewing pleasure. I can wait until tomorrow for election results. :)

Thanks, for the videos, Mike. I think the band is good. Good but not great. It’s all personal preference though, and I’m not making a comparison which would be unfair IMHO. I certainly wouldn’t compare myself with the guys. They blow me away. Having said that, there are a couple of things I see for observation, and are only my opinion which amounts to diddly squat in most cases.

I certainly find no problem in their musicianship. They play mighty fine. They also put on a good show, which will gather more fans than not.

The vocals are okay for me; however, I do think that’s their weakest link as others may disagree. I just don’t think it’s up to par with their playing skills. That’s not unusual with many bands though, and the opposite is true as well, perhaps poor musicianship (not here) being the case more often. Just because someone wants to sing, has the name, position, or personality to sing, or whatever doesn’t mean they shouldn’t sing. It also doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t rule out some better pipes to throw into the mix, especially if you have the band to back it up. I think this may be the case.

We’ve all followed bands who get by in that area based on other considerations, and if that works who’s to argue that? Not me. I just think it’s a missed opportunity that even an audience is willing to overlook. That makes it easy for a band to fall into the same pit. Why golly gee Batman. Even I have supporting fans that give me a break. Poor souls.

The key that opens doors can also be a great song, a great producer, and a great recording. It looks like this is happening, and great guest performers can only be beneficial to success which I wish for the band.

I can take them as they are, may find there’s more to like which I’ve yet to discover, and I’m sure others have and will too. That’s my diddley squat. 8)

I hear ya, FSB!

I'm more impressed with their potential given their ancestry.

I'd like to see more bands that don't fall into the pop schlock that you hear on mainstream radio.

Agreed on both accounts. I got a little long winded that I’m famous for; but, your post is what I was thinking, Mike. The potential is there for sure. You hit the nail on the head methinks. :)
Friendship and fun can be what it is, and that may be enough for this band. With a little luck. sometimes magic appears. Business is another matter that can be a necessary evil. Nothing new there, and these guys are professionals.

Depending on who the key music director is or will be (often from keyboards) it will be essential to have a goal and solid plan as you well know. There is a unique danger with bands like this, however, in stepping up to make and/or accept changes for that plan. With personalities the makeup of the group is not only decided within the band, it’s also with those audiences I spoke of who also can work for or against that goal. On the other hand, the more established, the more risk. That’s a shakey stage that doesn’t affect all bands.
