Anyone planning to go see Bohemian Rhapsody? I am not sure if I want to or not. when I was younger I loved their music. might be interesting to see how the band got started.

I have seen a couple mixed reviews about it so far.

I shall almost certainly see at the cinema. I am a fan of the band and also as a fan of Midsummer murders it would be fun to see Gwylim Lee as Brian May and as a Jurassic Park fan to see Joseph Mozello as John Deacon. The mixed reviews have actually made me more curious about the move, not less.

I saw Queen open for Mott The Hoople in '74. They were great. Watching the Politicization of a great band is not what I am into. Bad idea to watch this movie, better to watch their videos and listen to their albums.

...and read their books. Must be over 20 biographies and autobiographies!

I only saw Queen post-Freddie. But I am sure they were one of those bands that were great even on a bad night. But ... how was Mott The Hoople???

Dailybeast is extremely critical, calling it an exploitation piece and written from the viewpoint of May and Taylor being bitter. Factual inaccuracies (Freddie's diagnosis was what triggered them to perform for Live Aid, except the diagnosis was 2 years later), etc...

I’d like to see such a story; however, with respect for the talent and their accomplishments, I’ll pass for the moment. I seldom jump on the hype and gravy train of promotion that precedes or follows the flag waving. Not hard to get great reviews when it sells Rolling Stone, cover photos and photo journalism for magazines, increases TV ratings, sells records, videos, concerts, posters, fashion, and books. Lots of books. The sky’s the limit. Does this lessen the odds of the movie being good or even great? Not really. But, bad press doesn’t sell, and yet, with great reviews and/or promotion. bad or mediocre movies or compromised documentaries can do very well indeed. Smart talk might even add some awards which adds rewards.

Bohemian Rhapsody may indeed be worthy. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Mott was a show, electrified. Why Queen opened the tour for them ( their only opening gig in their history). Freddie was able to absorb that every night and the rest is history.

I'll watch it when it comes to a format I can view at home. Netflix, Sling, Roku, etc...
I don't do "Movie Theaters" ever since the Drive-In disappeared from my area.

Love the Drive-In! We are fortunate to still have one in our area, and it seems to be doing fairly well. Great value, especially when you go with kids. They show double-features for every film and even some triple features on weekends in the summer.

Until the late sixties we had six Drive-Ins, some right inside the city limits. They progressed from hang on the window speakers to tuning in your car radio with a tow truck standing by. I never thought that was a good idea. Others with neighbourhood houses facing the screen held parties as they pumped in free audio from the theatre.

We loved it when we didn’t have a lightning storm, or we weren’t freezing just before snowfall. They were nice enough to supply a heater that ran a cord into the car. It was a place to take the girlfriend, or family (even my wife’s grandma who loved movies because theatres were difficult for her). The bigger the car the better. Today’s bucket seats wouldn’t cut it, especially for over nighters. That’s where the back seat came in. Grab a pizza or Chinese food, some big drinks from 7-11, a cooler, hit the popcorn stand, and you’re good to go. The best horror movies ever as long as the sun wasn’t out. Sigourney could be seen, but Alien was just an imagination in the washout.

I once did a commercial where we had classic cars. We shone colours on the screen to match cards handed out, and then lights, horns, and car doors did their thing. Sadly, the following day this next to last Drive-In was torn down.
Even if a Drive-In was available, I’d pass on the musicals. Home theatre can be okay to awesome; but, for me, something like Bohemian Rhapsody and certain blockbusters rock in today’s better theatres. Mrs. FSB just went a block from home to A Star Is Born with Gaga, and she said it was tough sitting in that oversized theatre recliner. I think she wants one.
Ticketmaster is in the mix for theatre ticket sales now. So, at today’s prices that recliner doesn’t seem like a bad deal. :P

Sorry to hear the drive-in is no longer around in your area. It's a pretty regular activity for my family in the summer. Kids four and under are free! We pack a cooler with drinks, pop the hatch on the back of the SUV and sit outside on folding chairs (temperatures permitting).

That’s great, schnepf13! I can see having the SUV. That’s how we’d camp by a lake on a moment’s notice. It’s certainly a wonderful way to create memories. I wish you and yours many more movie nights on the parking lot. Thanks, for keeping up the tradition.

Times have changed in some places, sadly. I think here the last hold out had mixed feelings. The owner and a large following bent over backwards to keep the last updated theatre; but, in the end, aside from real estate offerings and the seasons, the reality sunk in that there was a remote chance of gang violence or just a bunch of goofballs. It’s a good thing Marlon Brando, James Dean, and West Side Story weren’t on the billboard.

Perhaps, that is one reason why the odds of finding a drive-in out in the country where the locals know each other well seems to have a better chance. Although, I’ve been in some pretty rowdy towns. One was right out of a movie with a cowboy sheriff that just showed up for work and, amongst other things, watched a six pack toting youth walk past him and ignored cars playing skateboard on the sidewalks with boisterous beer swizzling teenagers yelling at town folk. We didn’t stay long enough to see if they had a drive-in. Bubba would probably have owned it, and I doubt if he would have played Bohemian Rhapsody had it been around. Maybe Mad Max or Westworld.

we still have a drive in out by us, funny how many folks from the city come out to go to the drive in as a family event.
