My neighbour and I were discussing the fact that the world is changing at a rapid rate. I can’t say why or even if it’s all justifiable . . . other than change for change sake is not always thought out or an advantage. Some choose not to cook and that’s fine; but, it’s unfortunate to not be able to boil water need be. Siri might be able to help, but she/he might tell you to lance a boil. Good luck with that.
This story has been around for awhile. It has hit the media once again mostly because inserting a microchip beneath the skin is a growing trend that has hit our shoreline.

Say what you will, but just because we can, should we? What if our ears could be cut off and replaced with technology. What if we could do the same with eyes? What if we could improve our fingers or limbs? For those physically challenged, perhaps, but, what about programming your hands for the guitar? Maybe, we could just wave our hand over a music book and play like Eric or Jimi.

“Be careful what you wish for” works for me.

https://www.npr.org/2018/10/22/65880870 ... their-skin

What would you like to have the chip do (if anything).
What would you not want to have the chip do?

Your thoughts and comments will be appreciated and make sure to add your vote.

TIA
FSB

The only chips I want are when I have a sandwich for lunch, or a snack. :P Call me a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy wacko (I'm actually not,) or whatever, but f that crap! I'll carry my iPhone tapped into everything, but I can always get rid of it, or shut it off, but nothing implanted.

Interesting topic, FSB. I can see no reason why I would allow a chip to be implanted into my body. My main concerns are about hacking and privacy infringement.

I said undecided only because the data on the chip could be useful in case of emergency. But the data in the wrong hands always makes me a bit defensive towards the install. If I could control what specific data was on the chip and have the sole right of editing it would be good for basic medical conditions, current medications, next of kin etc. but not much more than that.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I chose "undecided". Not feeling too chipper today.

Me thinks you are right there, Matt. Perhaps, even a raging storm.

Two things that concern me is the connection with industry which appears to be gaining more control of our daily lives, and EMF from associated devices.

Privacy? If it isn’t already gone it soon will be. IMHO

Thanks, for adding your comments y’all and contributing to the poll.

I find it curious that these potential Big Brother tools can not always be brought on by governments; but, they can be, have been, and will continue to be introduced by industry with a world captivated audience.
Just give me a beach or a mountain side, a toque, and a guitar and I’m good to go. YMMV :D

I voted no f@$%ing way.
First I am not too social, I have enough friends, and I can count them on my fingers. This forum is about the only social thing I do. As it is, I protect my information, likes it's nobody's business. I have been refused credit cards as I will not give anybody but my employer and the government my Social Security card number. I have had numbers made for me in place of my SS number. I remember when I received my SS card it said right on the form I got with it " Not for identification purpose",and I do not let any organization use it for that reason, yes sometimes I am limited for this action.
Here is a quote from the article "The chips are designed to speed up users' daily routines and make their lives more convenient — accessing their homes, offices and gyms is as easy as swiping their hands against digital readers." For me I would like to slow down my daily routines, and I don't mind using key, as a matter of fact I like my keys.
"Having different cards and tokens verifying your identity to a bunch of different systems just doesn't make sense," he says. "Using a chip means that the hyper-connected surroundings that you live in every day can be streamlined." I like my cards and if they do not believe it is me using my Drivers license or passport I won't care.
For me I would love to get off the grid, slowdown, plug into my old Fender Tube Amps, and record into my Otari MX5050 Mk3 8 track 1/2 inch Tape Recorder
Maybe I am getting old and that's just fine with me, but the chip is to George Orwell (1984) for me

I’m with you there, Mud. Nice deck. I’m old enough to remember it being sold. I have an old Teac 3340S 4 track 1/4 inch that has seen better days, and a backup two track Akai that I picked up for $40 with Dolby and DBX, so I envy you as I know how good that Otari is. I cut my teeth on an Ampex 351, and later on Roberts, Revox, and Scully. I have to admit that there are some advantages to digital (including this Forum), but there ain’t nothing wrong with the reel world either. :P

there was a co here in WI that not too long ago offered chips to their employees free of charge. they are in the business of designing the chips. they could use them at vending machines, time cards, etc.

as for me.....no way.

Thanks, for chiming in here avenger79. That’s one more example of how it’s done and who stands to benefit. Free, huh?

This is something I would never do willingly. It is bad enough that people are falling all over themselves to tote around technology that compromises their privacy and safety. Smart phones, smart homes, auto manufacturer installed GPS and communication services. This technology is always "on" and tracking and listening. Our company IT tech showed me just how easy it is to hack into a smart home and watch the clueless folks in their house. Insane!

It was not too long ago guys made fun of women "always on that telephone yacking" yet now guys are just as bad. The sad state of men in our culture. Our fathers crossed the oceans and lands with just a compass and the north star. Now many men cannot navigate the next city over without GPS and "Alexa" they are clueless as to which way is North, South, East or West.

No chip for me!

There is too much technology as it is. I think in some cases it is even going backwards and people worn't stand up to it or it's creators.

One way it is going backwards is these contactless payment cards, first they put a smart chip on the card to make it more secure so it will only work when you enter your pin. Then some genius comes up with the idea of making it work contactless so now I have a card with a smart chip that can be used by just waving it over the payment device without entering a pin code.

I was trained as a systems analyst so technology subjects really get me going.

I don't even use a mobile phone, no need.

OK I've put my 2p worth in so I'll stop now while I'm ahead.

Hey there, Steve. I feel your pain. When I spent time in your fair country in 1965 the local pubs, full of live music, provided a well used phone which was commonly used amongst the regulars who cheerfully met on a daily basis to share comradery face to face. Today it’s dark clubs, turntables, and texting. Ironically, the texting and Twitter went to saving some of those disappearing pubs.

I can’t blame the youth for wanting to go and have their thing; but, there’s something to be said about those Pubs. They make wayyyy better chips.:P
Cheers!
