Interesting. Hard to judge the size of that bass since Stanley is a very large man.

Looks like a Strat body with the bridge in the normal Strat location, with a somewhat longer neck. Which suggests a short-scale bass, or maybe baritone tuning?

Then again, the body could be Strat shaped but larger, with a long scale. Which would make the overall length immense -- fine for a physical giant like Stanley, but maybe unwieldy for shorter people.

Saw a photo of him playing this Jason Smith masterbuilt Jazz with N3s, early 60s decals and pre-2010 Deluxe specifications.

Here's another shot of this Jason Smith custom creation with the sunburst Marcus bass pictured in the left side:

Yeah Stanley is a big dude plus he always played short scale basses. It wouldn't surprise me if he uses Tenor tuning (A-D-G-C). He talked a little about it in the new issue of Bass Player I think it might be available to the public in the future.

The CS Jazz Bass Stan plays was one of the two transitional prototypes serving as a platform for the post-2010 Deluxes & Elites. The 2nd prototype belongs to Rhonda Smith.

I think I have a recent issue of Bass Player with him featured. I'll check later to confirm that, since I'm a few issues behind in reading my subscription to it.

I saw him in concert back in the late 80's, or early 90's in the band Animal Logic, with Stewart Copeland, from The Police. I remember him playing on his Alembic signature bass. I never knew he played any Fenders, but I haven't really seen anything with him in it in many years.

Stan's first Fender was a sunburst Marcus Jazz he got as a gift from the bass funkmeister himself.

Haha yep, can confirm. I met him after a concert about 15 years ago. Seems like a nice enough guy and man he is the real deal. Just an absolute mountain of musical knowledge, experience and instincts.
