I started getting them about ten years ago and so far, so good
and haven't had the flu.

Did you get one?

Nope! Doctor’s orders. I considered it, but he is on staff at a local hospital, has two sons that are doctors, and his opinion was based on some recent wide respectable research comparing flus and the hospital staff who are required to take the shots. This isn’t a confirmation of success though, as it also has some political and legal ramification when dealing with patients and their families. Besides, it is hard to get trusted documentation with all the players aiming to benefit from this practice. Good or bad we all know how the bad has worked and from the same parties who will do good for us of which I am thankful.

Not to say flu shots can’t work but, since my doctor just retired, my new one (who also is on staff at the hospital) hasn’t suggested having the shot either, and we just went through a full requirement update for my physical.

I do know for some it has been thought to be successful, but the flu is many things and, although the shot works for a limited common flu, research for a new more effective vaccine has been underway for some time to be more compatible with more flus. It is believed to be close to acceptance.

The problem is today’s variety includes more potency and it is often in a mutated form that continuously changes.

I had the flu from last January to last May; but, my ability to fight it off was restricted compared to today. There will be a new whole house humidifier and with new medication and me with some new platinum inserts  we’ll see how it goes. Never say never, and if it’s working for you I would say to continue because I don’t believe in fixing what’s not broken.

FSB

I find vaccines interesting and, for my University English course, I even wrote a studied report about ramifications and failures of a possible Aids vaccine. Viruses disappear, but tend to return and do not go away completely. Varieties of Smallpox, once considered abolished, are said to have returned, and even global warming is being looked at as a possible contender to thaw areas of where smallpox storage exists. Polio, which inflicted this neighbourhood and Mrs. FSB who was lucky to have gotten through it to where it is undetectable today, has reared it’s ugly head again. Without the Polio vaccine we would have all been worse off.

Up to the late 60s AFAIK both the military and travelers took vaccines for all sorts of travel. It was mandatory and government controlled. That seems to be less prevalent now and some of it has to do with civil rights with questions regarding how and why they were distributed in the first place. I can’t say they didn’t work, only that the lack of them has had minimal implications or we would have heard of it. I can remember getting poked by a couple of needles in one day. I’m sure some soldiers and tourists still get the shots while others don’t.

Interesting FSB!

I got the Fluad vaccine. Not sure if they vary by country or not?

Not yet, but I think after Halloween. That's when we typically get one, that way it lasts longer into the winter season.

Sure did! I get one every October. They work. Flu kills seniors a bit too easily, and we get a special vaccine.

No, I've always had a reaction after the flu-shot so stopped getting them when I got out of the Air Force.

Yep, got one two weeks ago. I was lazy about getting them, but became more careful about it after a bad bout of the flu 3 years ago. Haven't gotten it since. And with a couple of small kids in the house (and anew niece on the way), it just seems like a good idea.

Thanks. for the link, Mike.

I’m not sure about the Fluad vaccine availability here in Canada, Mike. Looks promising. I’m allergic to most antibiotics so that is a concern. My doctor with joviality said that we were building up a resistance after my last terrible bout of the flu. That’s probably true for the one strain that kept me in bed early in the year. The worse I’ve ever experienced. Almost four months.

Canada and others generally follow whatever the WHO (World Health Organization) uses and recommends each year. It is subject to change even in midyear. There may be a variety of formulas to fight more than one flu. The flu vaccine most often has a six month advance to distribution, so any strain after that window gets a pass and puts us more at risk unless you happen to have something to prevent it.

I found these interesting articles for the 2018/19 flu season albeit from the beginning of the year. Note some differences regarding the northern hemisphere versus the southern hemisphere. The WHO is most interested in these differences today which wasn’t always the case as discovery and research eventually created a need.

Canada’s prevention considerations:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/flu-vacc ... -1.4476100

I added this to point out the hemisphere relationship.
https://www.uspharmacist.com/article/cd ... a-vaccine/

There’s so much more which can get pretty detailed which one can find, but I hope the links above give a better idea on how the basics work on this side of the pond.

Vaccine or no vaccine, here’s wishing the flu takes a holiday and doesn’t pay you a visit.

If you can hang in till later as you mentioned Paul I can see where that might work. You are more likely to get the recent version of the shot should there be any new alert.

I haven't had a flu shot since I stopped working in a hospital. At first, they were optional but they became mandatory, more or less. You had the option to not get vaccinated, but, if you chose not to, you had to wear a mask all day long (except on breaks). Rather than wear a mask, I chose to bite the bullet and get the shot.

Nope.
The one and only time I got a flu shot as an adult, I got sicker than a dog.
No shot...and I'm fine.

I felt the same after the Pneumonia shot but didn't get the flu shot w/ it. It was gone w/in three days. I usually get the flu shot in the spring, for some reason I've always got a summer fluishness. I need one more shot this year, shingles.

Do you think it would turn my silver hair back to blonde like when I was 5? If it does . . . sign me up. :P

I said no.
If there had been an option to say No F$%@*n' way! Absolutely not! I would have chosen it.

Some of my reasons:
- Daily low-dose vitamin C or daily consumption of C-rich foods and drinking the prescribed amount of water is a better alternative to the flu-shot and has a better chance of success.
- Increased public use of artificially made immunization encourages bugs to mutate thereby creating so-called super-bugs.
- Flu-shots contain mercury.
- Flu-shots are developed based on "best guesses" as to what strains will present the greater risk and as such mistakes in guessing are made and ineffectiveness is well documented.
- Flu vaccines introduce live virus to the body which can be dangerous to some people.
- There is enough controversy over vaccines in general to at the very least warrant caution.
- It's all about the money as far as Big Pharma is concerned, which is why we are being pushed into it every year.
- Senior citizens are known to be at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's if they get the flu-shot.

Plus, I don't like having needles poked into me.
Also, actually getting the flu is my body's best method of immunizing against further bouts of flu.
