I have two questions.
I have a friend who has a 1988 Strat who said he bought it new.
He is bringing it over this Friday to show it to me.
He says it has a Strat neck with a Telecaster name on it.
The only thing changed is the bridge pickup.
I am considering purchasing it if it is in fact original.
Have you ever heard of this happening.
A Strat with a Strat neck but with a Tele name on it?
I've never heard of this and am skeptical about it.
I also own a hardtail Strat with a Natural finish with a serial # of S956715.
It has a 3 bolt tilt neck.
The pickups are stamped with Neck 211080, middle 210480, and bridge 125780.
I purchased the guitar used in 1981.Is there any way I can find out if this ia a 1979 or a 1980?

Dominic

Never hear about a Stratocaster neck with Telecaster name on it.

Dating guitar
1- Serial number
2- date on neck and neck pocket on the body
3- date codes on pots

Welcome to the Forum diggidom46. Interesting situation, can't say that I've ever heard of that.

Ditto.
Some Tele models used the large CBS style Strat headstock like your '79, but an '88 Strat would have a traditional Strat headstock and say "Stratocaster"
A "Tele" name on a Strat body would certainly be nothing more than a Partscaster.

Hi Dominic – as the pickups for your hardtail Strat are all from 1980, I'd say the rest of the guitar is as well. I have a black hardtail Strat with an S9 serial as well, but the pickups date from '76–'78... those parts were hanging around for a while before they put them together. "S" stands for "Seventy" and "9" can mean anything from '78 to '81. By that stage, Fender was trying to dispose of surplus stocks, some of which were not particularly desirable... many Strats of that era turned out fine, but there were a higher proportion of heavy, lifeless instruments coming out in the late seventies than at any other time. If they're still getting played 40 years later, they're probably pretty good!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
