Well, I believe that report have said that, but it's utter hogwash! Part of any decent statistics course is explaining how statistics can be manipulated to paint a (false) picture. This is a prime example. Don't believe the hype!

What? Say it ain’t so. You mean the world ain’t flat? Dang! When I took 10 days to cross the Atlantic I thought I might fall off the end of the earth. :P
I know what you mean about statistics, Ghost. Before the Internet I used to use many respected resources directly and indirectly (often with microfilm) when I made programming for work. One political party replaced a long time head of a government statistics department, and I soon discovered non-partisan and mostly neutral methods and direction took a left turn. So much so that the service lost it’s top rated international respect and credibility. It has yet to regain the adoration upon which other countries once followed for an example as it slipped down and out of the top ten last I looked.

We all know how polls work in elections and the failures of economics.

However, it all goes to create jobs and makes for a lot of conversations. Pretty much everything that can be argued and/or discussed has it’s advocates and naysayers. The proof is in the pudding.

I suppose that works for ghosts and aliens too.

Very cool video, Mike.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear. I'm not saying you believe the world is flat. I'm saying the "1 in 3" statistic is hogwash. No, if you gather my entire family in one room, 1/3 of them do not believe the Earth is flat and I assume you could say the same. That "factoid" is absurd and bogus.

No worries. I’m not disagreeing with you Ghost. The factoid is that it had been reported that way. Not that 1/3 is correct; but, your “gather my entire family in one room, 1/3 of them do not believe the Earth is flat” is a correct analysis and comparison accordingly. I get ya ghost_of_strings. The hogwash on the 1/3 Flat Earth believers is there, and your link is a very good look at it all. :D
I get the same heebee jeebies and disgust when reports, surveys, and polls say Americans, Canadians, and/or Brits and others say or believe or choose this or that. Poppycock! Some do and some don’t. Unfortunately, those reports don’t have the same impact unless it is 100% or presented for a 100% assumption. It is pretty safe to say the actual statistics can even be more or less than 50%; but, 100% or 50% of what %, etc.? It is also true that nationalities of Americans, Canadians. and/or Brits and others say or believe or choose this or that; but, to what extent makes all the difference . . . one more example of weighting that can be tossed aside when it suits the motive.

Aside from calculated science and other methods to find the truth, many discoveries have been made by a minority only to be adopted by a majority. It certainly wasn’t a majority to claim the world is round.

There is so much from the ancient and today’s world that we have yet to prove or understand. It’s right in front of us, and what we have been told to believe is questioned daily. The Great Pyramids are now being scrutinized to have been built by another in a different time. There is no science, old science, new science, good and bad science.

Contact with a ghost or alien or life on a planet trumps any science or related data should that be the case. While science and data can be catalysts, proving a ghost or alien or life on a planet is another matter. Taking it further, if ghosts exist for us, do they exist for aliens? Are any of these the ghosts that appear to us?

FSB

If it’s teach or tell me or show me . . . I’ll take show me every time. YMMV

I don't believe in spirits, or souls, or anything of the such. That is is all fantasy made up by people who cannot deal with reality. The only thing that happens after death is decomposition.

As for extra-terrestrial life, absolutely yes. If life can happen on one planet, it can happen elsewhere. Plus, with how large our galaxy is, our solar system is not even a grain of sand on the beach. For that matter, how many galaxies have we discovered so far? Earth is insignificant and worthless in the grand scale of the universe. To say we are the only life in the entire universe is self-centered, arrogant, and pompous.

Families would generally tend to be more like-minded.
Poll my family and you'll find that 9 out of 10 of us are so far to the right that we make Ronald Reagan and John Wayne look like Che Guevara in comparison, and we've got that one that is a hard left anti-vaxxer vegan alcoholic who is in therapy for depression (takes after her grandmother).

Likewise, talk to the family of a "flat earther" and you'll probably find at least 1:3 who are on that extreme, and possibly all of them deny that humans have ever left low earth orbit.

But that's the problem with polling and statistics.
Once the sample size is too small WRT the general population, the results become meaningless unless they are intelligently framed... and even with a large sample size, distribution of the poll can be a problem.
8 out of 10 residents of metropolitan coastal cities support....
That *may* a useful statistic.

8 out of 10 Americans polled....
That is completely useless information.

Sample size of 10 million
Might be a meaningful number if evenly distributed based on population density among the entire country.
Meaningless number if it is 2.5 million each from LA, SF, NYC, and Atlanta.

Ya got it right on polling, Rich. In fact you can take all of that to the bank. IMHO.

It’s not unlike the polls here in the Forum being representative of those who participate only. Not at all close to being accurate representation of those affected as a whole. I wouldn’t give diddly about weighted measurements relating to polls either. All in all it’s a crap shoot at best, and for all the examples of polls being correct there are likely a similar amount more or less shown to have a failing result (especially under the microscope).

They are entertaining, however, and if used deceivingly, they can cause influence in turning opinions and action which often is their sole purpose. Examples of this marketing (as opposed to informational) process are voting and even purchasing. Looks good on paper though. :P
FSB

I don’t think a poll could tell us if aliens or ghosts exist; but, maybe we’d get lucky with the results. Who would we poll? Who wouldn’t we poll? What questions would we ask? What would we leave out? What questions, if any, would be bundled to give a more preferential result? How would we organize the questioning? What qualifications are to be met? Would we only collect the parts of a poll that have beneficial results, and reject the rest?
Yada yada.
