do you buy only pedals with a try out and return policy, do you buy or keep a pedal with the idea that you’ll eventually get a rig that you hope will deliver, do you buy on impulse or recommendation (Face to face, YouTube, Web site, Ads and news letters, etc. ) or do you just roll the dice and collect pedals (some that collect dust), or . . . ?

I usually know what effect I am after...and I like to go for the best pedal at the best price (meaning, I like 'cheap', but it's gotta do what it's supposed to do and sound good also).
I research the pedals on YouTube to get a feel for their sound, features, and playability.
I order from a gear site that offers a 45 day hassle free return policy that pays shipping both ways.

My modest chain consists of 3 brands:
4 Fender Pedals
4 Behringer Pedals (yes, they DO make some decent pedals)
2 Electro Harmonix Pedals
1 Fender (2 button) Foot Switch for my Super Champ X2
1 Fender (4 button) Foot Switch for my Mustang IV

Thanks, for dropping in Omar and White Dog.

When I think of it, we don’t get to take a lawnmower for a drive, and it usually takes some time before we get to fully test out a car or boat before making those purchases where returns are either limited or non existent. Reputation helps, but that isn’t always the case. Generally, it’s buyer beware on a slew of items.

Word of mouth, manufacturer ads and promos, published reviews, online shopping comments, social media including this Forum, YouTube and other recommendations are certainly better than nothing when you can’t take a preferred test run.

Before the Internet, I grew up living on an island and mail order was a hobby as well as a necessity. I ordered everything from widgets to thingsmabobs. The fun not only was to get the parcel, but to do the search as well. It would have been nice to have the resources available today to research the goods and options before ordering. The magazine ads, newspaper, library, TV, cereal box and comic book, ruled. The problem was you might never have the article or you would lose it. Still, rolling the dice was an adventure in itself. :P
Returns are certainly an advantage, as long as they’re free. IMHO

I’ve added this question to the thread:

Do you have any pedals that you have fixed or would consider fixing, or is that pedal just going to the pedal grave yard”?

If you guys don't mind I would like to derail this thread, at least temporarily anyway.
I'd like to know how you sell pedals.
Do you advertise them online?
Do you take them to a retailer and trade them in on something else?
Do you put the word out to your friends and sell them by word of mouth?
Also, how much do you charge?
I mean in relation to the cost of a new one, assuming the one you're selling is in mint condition and you still have the original box and paperwork.

No problem, Matt. I was about to change this thread’s title to “How Do You Buy and Sell Pedals” to reflect your request; but, I’m a little gun shy in case others misinterpret or abuse the rules and regulations regarding the selling or advertising here on the Forum as expected, I think your questions are a fine addition, and could be helpful.

Cheers!

I've never had to 'fix' a pedal, but I DO have a Behringer EQ700 Graphic Equalizer 7-Band EQ Pedal that has become pretty noisy even running through my Electro Harmonix 'The Silencer'---all I can do is try to "loop" it through The Silencer (it has that feature, direct in the chain or loop)...and if that doesn't quiet the EQ down, it'll go in the trash; I paid $25 for it, and I'm willing to eat $25.
Good looking pedal, and good concept, but if I can't quiet it down it's gotta go.

I ALWAYS keep the box and everything that the pedal comes with. I have never sold a pedal, but I would take a few pic's of the pedal and original box and put it on Craigslist---Craigslist sucks these days, but it's easy, and I'm never in a hurry or hurting for money. I HAVE just given a pedal to a friend before.

I haven't sold a pedal in a while, but in the past I had most success putting them up for auction on eBay. With the original box and paperwork, it wasn't too unusual for me to get about 60% of the pedal's original cost (more if it was out-of-production or otherwise hard-to-find). Since I had acquired the bulk of those pedals used on Craigslist, I could actually make a little profit on many of them. Not enough to make any real money, but enough to keep getting more pedals so I could keep experimenting with my board setup! :)

With used pedals that are still in production, I think it's hard to expect to get back more than about 50-60% of the original retail cost, even if they're in perfect shape and you have all the original paperwork. Charge any more than that and most people would rather get something brand new at Guitar Center with a return policy and a full warranty.

50% - 60% is also what I usually ask.
If it's $189 before tax I set the price at $100.
I'm currently on a pedal purging mission.
I always keep all of the original packaging and papers and my pedals are always in mint condition.
I mostly post them on KiJiJi with hi-res pics from all angles.
KiJiJi doesn't have any fees unless you want top placement.
I tend to ignore those top placed ads myself because I've found the sellers tend to up the price, preumably to offset the fees.
I don't seem to be getting any bites though.
At least nothing serious.
I have people offering me 25% of new.
I ignore those offers.
To my way of thinking, if they low ball that badly I don't like giving the offer credibility by addressing it.
I was just wondering if my pricing was too high is all.
Thanks for your responses.

I will keep posting them.
Christmas is coming and I figure some people may have increased interest then.

Why on Earth would I do that?
That's like selling a guitar... or selling a child!

Seriously... I've never sold a pedal. After a brief "I'm freaking broke" period in the early 80s where I sold my only guitar and amp (I honestly don't know what happened to my MXR fuzz), I've sold three guitars... one to some unknown person, one back to the friend that I originally bought it from, and one to my boss.

I always try out every bit of gear I ever buy, and no exceptions. Usually, that means going to an actual shop. While I am doing this, I also compare it to similar stuff. Case in point is the Wampler Tape Echo. I wanted to demo that, and I saw the shop also has a Strymon echo, so I did a shootout between them. Turns out, I prefer the Wampler, and I absolutely fell in love with the Wampler.

Of course, there is a downside, and that is you fall in love with other stuff you never intend to fall in love with. When I did that aforementioned shootout, I did it with an American Elite Thinline Telecaster, and I ended up playing it for TWO HOURS. I wish I could buy it, but for $2,000 it is not even on my radar. I wish....I wish....
