ok so question is "would you buy a new Amer Professional Strat if you could, even though you can't play well enough to "deserve" it"

I have played for years, off and on. never gotten really good. no band etc. I have always wanted an Amer Strat. never pulled the trigger. so was thinking this year I could, I love the antique olive color and have some extra coin laying around.
local shop has one in olive. price isn't bad.

I currently have 3 elec guitars and am not planning on getting rid of any of them. I joke with my friends that I am more of a collector then a player.

I almost feel guilty about it as I have friends who are playing in bands with low end equipment and I am looking at getting something way above my ability just because I want it.

what are your thoughts?

Hell yeah!
Forget all the crap about deserving this and that. You've obviously achieved the financial means to buy it, I'd say that is deserving enough.
Sounds like you own three collector type guitars and buying a modern player will help keep the condition of the collector stuff from taking on more wear from playing.
While a new American Pro may not become a collector guitar in your lifetime, it likely wont depreciate significantly either.

I've been playing off/on since high school and I'm ok with not being a very good player or probably never being good enough to play for pay. But there are few things in life that have given me more solace or been better for my health.

My diagnosis......?

You suffer from "affluenza". I prescribe three months of self-esteem therapy and a follow-up appointment to chart your progress.

See my receptionist on your way out for payment arrangements.

this aint no dress rehearsal, and you can't take anything with you when you go. so heck yea.. if you want this, and you can swing it, by all means, go for it. never mind this stuff "I'm not good enough for it" That changes over time, and a good / great guitar will help you get to the next level in ways you don't even realize.

Do it..

I like the way you think. I am leaning towards "screw it, I am getting it"

I generally don't like to quote myself, but in this case I will.

I say go for it, and after you get it home take photos of it and post them on the forum. Enjoy.
The more new guitars the better.

Yes! If you want it and you feel you can afford it by all means go for it! Having an instrument you are exited about playing will inspire you to practice more and become an even better player.

I'm in exactly the same boat. Started playing in '77... Currently have 7 or 8 electrics and 3 acoustics, including two Fullerton-built G&Ls from the mid 90s and a Corona-built Fender... Pre-1985 Fender 100w SS amp, 1st-Gen Blues Jr, an old Carvin X100 in an oak cabinet (the Carvin clone of the Boogie), and my wife bought me a Marshall MG practice amp for my birthday this year.

Nothing to feel guilty about. I'm planning to play a LOT more after I retire!

2nd opinion here.
I disagree with the "affluenza" diagnosis.
The patient shows a great degree of humility not typically found in those afflicted with affluenza.
I am also not detecting any signs of smugness, ostentatiousness or pretentiousness.

My diagnosis is a simple case of common GAS.
Unfortunately, like the common cold, symptoms may be relieved through generous application of Alder, Maple, and Rosewood, but the condition itself is typically chronic and relief is most often only temporary. Periods of remission tend to last from as long as 10 years, to extreme cases of only a few weeks.

i say go for it! I am in my mid-60s, and still buying. as a matter of fact, I have bought more in the last 5 years since I did when I first got a guitar in the early 1960's

the amount of pleasure I get from playing guitar cannot be measured.

There’s some camps that will tell us that a better guitar will make you want to be a better player, and yet we’ve all heard great players with lesser guitars.

As schnepf13 stated the guitar that excites you inspires you to practice more. Price aside that’s called Mojo and that is priceless. Perhaps, a lesser guitar fits the budget and still gives out Mojo.

I too have an axe that I don’t deserve based on age and skills. The Amer Dlx was a gift. It did inspire me to become a better player. My simple answer to your question is Yup! So keep those guitars of yours should you choose, and if you desire another I say, “Go forth and multiply” avenger79. :D
FSB

PS I doubt if you’ll regret having it, but you might regret not having it.

+1 on that! When we learned that our first child was on the way, I decided to take the plunge and buy (with my wife's permission) an American Standard Strat. At the time the price was about a grand, which was a bit more than I had a right to spend on a musical instrument. But I really wanted to have at least one really nice electric guitar before the expenses of parenthood might prevent me from getting one. It's a beautiful instrument and I don't regret getting buying it for a moment.
