Tonight we had a prairie rolling thunder and lightning rain storm, Hail was predicted south of us; but, as usual we will learn of any possibile damage elsewhere tomorrow.

I can only think of what Hurricane Florence has in her recipe for disaster. In the ‘70s I and my wife sat in our full size car with flood water half way up the doors, and I could tell you the dangers and problems of having your exhaust under water, wading in polluted water, or the times the boat motor almost left us stranded while the boat filled with rain water, and so on; however, none of that compares to the hurt those reluctant individuals are in for if they get caught with Florence. She’s not worth meeting. IMHO.

Those in the path need to stay safe, and if possible, need be, they need to vacate to a place where odds are better. Look to Puerto Rico and other disasters for a good reason to reconsider.
I understand the brave who fight the elements for their cause, but the foolish should know there will sometimes be survivors, sometimes not, and there will often be casualties, some of whom thought they knew better. Evidently not.

I saw this last year.

Update:

I just saw space photos of the hurricane where photos needed an extreme wide angle lense to capture the photo(s), and it is said 83 foot waves (a 7 story building) are accompanying the storm, not to say those monster waves will hit the shore, but a height of 13 feet is not out of the question when the surge arrives.

Forget the 83 feet. Let’s look at what 13 feet could bring with major debris:

Now ya know.

Kindly hope we'll not mourn innocent victims and the authorities take all the necessary actions to keep the citizens safe and secure.

What is going to be bad is the fact that just moving inland may not keep you safe. When the storm moves inland and hits the mountains, all that water is going to run off into the lower areas and pile up. Then it will move down the rivers to the coast and flood it again. I live in Florida; it is very flat here as it is in the gulf coast states. When we get 12 to 24 inches of rain it’s bad but the water spreads out over a broad area.

I see the storm was downgraded this morning. That is good news but all that water is still going to be devastating. :(

The 6 nuclear facilities across North and South Carolina are directly threatened by the hurricane causing a headache for the federal authorities concerning their safety.

Six nuclear power plants are in Hurricane Florence's path, officials say

Federal officials expressed confidence the six nuclear power plants in Hurricane Florence's path are safe, but some experts aren't so sure, warning that flooding and torrential rains could overwhelm their defenses.

The six nuclear power plants in North and South Carolina sit directly in the storm's projected path, according to Mary Catherine Green, spokeswoman for Duke Energy, which owns all six.

Duke's Brunswick Nuclear Plant and its Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant near Raleigh, both in North Carolina, are the closest to where the hurricane is forecast to make landfall, Green said.

In a press briefing, Jeff Byard, associate administrator for the FEMA Office of Response and Recovery, said the agency was not concerned about the power plants in the storm's path "at this time."

"Those power plants are, one, obviously hardened. Two, they have backup generators for power and we will rapidly assess any impacts to a nuclear power plant post-storm," Byard said in a call with media. "Obviously, it's something that we track and monitor but at this time we're not concerned with any issues pertaining to the nuclear power plants."

However, The Union of Concerned Scientists, a science-oriented public policy organization, is concerned about the Brunswick plant's ability to withstand the storm, because of what the group says is a lack of publicly available information about the plant's readiness. According to the group, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has not released public information validating that the plant has been properly updated to protect against flooding.

In 2012, Duke Energy reported to the NRC that there were hundreds of "missing or degraded flood barriers" at the plant. The follow-up report sent to the NRC by Duke Energy in 2015 was not made publicly available, according to The Union of Concerned Scientists.

NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said if the report wasn't made public it may have been because the report contained security-related information, but he wasn't aware of the 2015 report's status. Hannah said the Brunswick plant was up to code ahead of the storm.

"We have inspected their storm protections. We have looked at their preparations," Hannah said. "We're satisfied they met current NRC requirements."

Flooding at nuclear plants became more of a concern after a 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan caused one of the worst nuclear disasters since the 1986 Chernobyl incident. Three nuclear reactors melted down at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, releasing dangerous radiation into the surrounding area.

Since the 2011 incident, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has updated its requirements for nuclear power plants regarding natural disasters, according to former NRC chairman and managing director of the ND2 group Nils Diaz.

"These are 5-foot, 6-foot thick containment buildings," Diaz said. "Everything is put up high to prevent intrusion of a normal hurricane, but beyond that they have additional protections that are provided."

Diaz said he did not think there would be issues with the power plants in the upcoming storms.

NRC spokesman Scott Burnell said the Brunswick plant is properly fortified to withstand hurricanes of Florence's strength, and there are plans in place to shut down if necessary.

"The Brunswick plant already has procedures in place both to shut down well in advance of hurricane effects actually occurring on site," Burnell said. "The plant also has procedures in place to reinforce what are already robust defenses against flooding to ensure that it will remain safe as the storm passes by."

Burnell said the NRC has inspectors on site at Brunswick to monitor the plant as the staff go through their storm procedures, which he said is standard practice for the agency.

He said each plant has resident inspectors on site, and one or two additional inspectors at sites that are expected to be more directly impacted by the storm.

"We have staff at every site on the Carolinas for these plants where there's the expectation of significant effects from the storm," Burnell said.

Emergency planners have contemplated the risks of a hurricane-related nuclear power plant issue on the East Coast. A hurricane simulation exercise conducted by FEMA and the Energy Department this spring considered how to respond to damage at a nuclear power plant, according to The Associated Press, which first reported the exercise.

I’m guessing there will be another concern by those affected by flood water. We don’t hear of related pests much, even here in the flood plains.

Rats, mice, snakes, some insects and other critters are sure to head for higher ground, possibly in or on your property.

I have seen or heard of this problem with new construction. Depending on your location, it’s not unusual to find a snake in your kitchen or mice running in through the doorway when nearby terrain is altered. Whether this could happen with Hurricane Florence I can’t say, but I would not be surprised.

That is absolutely a concern. I participated in the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy in Long Island. It is also absolutely amazing what salt water does to destroy properties. Big heavy pressure treated floor boards curled into a "C" shape. The water soaked through my shoes and anywhere it touched my skin was irritated. People just piled their ruined possessions on the curb and trucks would come by to scoop it all up and dump it in dumptrucks.

Speaking from past experience, just when I thought I had it aced to maneuver my way home driving through deep water and crisscrossing dark streets, parking lots, and alleys, we came across dangling live power lines whipping and sparking in front, beside, and behind the car as we drove.

Why do I mention this? To tell those uninformed that the best thing to do is to not get out of the grounded car! What if you have to get out? Well . . . pray and good luck!

Facing the storm, it’s things like this that that can get you in trouble when least expected. Play it safe.

A relative of mine ignored an evacuation order and ended up with water inside the house (single floor) up to her neck. The house was elevated.

And once the flood hits, it becomes almost impossible for anyone to come rescue you even if they know exactly where you are.

When they tell you to leave, leave. End of story.

Imagine the nuclear nightmare caused by that storm if the 6 power plants in the Carolinas being under flood assault!

We hope the authorities had take all the precautions to prevent such serious accident...

It is reported at this time that eight months of rain are expected over three or four days. That won’t help.

I'm particularly worried about a radioactive emergency alert much worse than the Fukushima disaster of 2011 since the Carolinas' power plants are seriously threatened by the hurricane. Pray God this nightmare scenario would never happen.
