My suggestion is to never buy another amp that relies on Fender to maintain and update software. IMO they have a track record of creating a platform and then abandoning it to create a new platform your old equipment won't work with ..... Thus forcing you to buy their NEW amp. The new Mustang GT series uses an app called Tone. Give it 2 years and people will be wondering why 'Tone' doesn't work anymore.

You make a good point, Ghost.

As someone who has one of those modeling amps with the software, I’ve had six years of use, and I hope to have more; but, that doesn’t make it any easier with an upgrade to a current spec’d computer. So in that your post has validity.

The OSes, browsers, plug-ins, and security are not without fault either. Pretty hard to keep everything functioning when the running gear is being cannabalized. Also, hardware is constantly changing. If not physically, the popularity of computer choice shifts thus altering the market. Sure some amps have managed to fare better or worse, but history shows Murphy’s Law is dealing to the lucky and unlucky. It’s inevitable that losing will affect everyone at some time. It’s the nature of the beast when it comes to computers and software, by design or otherwise,

I spent too many years making commercials to be wooed by promotion. Informed yes. Swayed no. I would never choose an amp based on software supplemental features. That would be like buying a horse because of the saddle. You could of course buy a horse without a saddle.
I would buy and have bought a Mustang IV with deep editing, organizational, and tone related desktop software tools; but, I never had any misconception that it was both a blessing and a curse. I know the party will likely end soon with my next computer upgrade. As long as I have on-board modelling controls that are feature laden, I consider that a step up from not having any, even with the loss of the supplemental software. I would never buy an amp that was restricted by a desktop, tablet, or phone. Unfortunately, the Mustang’s Expression pedal for example does require software for full setup AFAIK.

The way I look at it as long as I like the sound and it works, that’s something I can live with. Software bundles are what they are. I miss the simple punching in the open reel deck when the machine ran and the tape became rare or expensive.

Modelling and software has a cool factor, though and when it works it’s very nice indeed. IMHO.

it's truly a shame FSB. I really enjoyed my Mustang III v1. It's still a fun amp. I just don't want my modeling amp (which is ALL about the "bells and whistles") to become less functional over time.

They could just as easily go the other way. In fact, going from Mustang v1 to v2 it seemed like they were headed in the right direction. The software worked with both, and the v2 amp had some extra models and stuff to motivate people to upgrade. That's how you keep people coming back for more. Even iPhones continue to work when they're 2 or 3 models out of date. I just personally can't do a whole new amp every 3 or 4 years to "keep up with the Joneses".

I hear ya, Ghost. Mustang III both versions are fine amps for their purpose. IMHO. My amp is a V1 and even with a minor intermittent burp that occurs from time to time, and even with the added features to V2, I prefer V1s cosmetics from the carbon look to the graphic titling. It owes me nothing and upgrading was not cost effective for my style of playing and use. A new or a new old tube amp would be a consideration., however.

I don’t disagree with your concerns about the software management. I’ve mentioned many times that I’ve been involved with leading edge computers in one form of another before they became household names. The PC caused a major shift in customer satisfaction though, and it always bothered and still does bother me. Why? It’s because other industry followed that business plan.

At one time the customer was catered to because there was so much competition. Suddenly guys like Gates and Jobs sell lifestyle and people accept less to join the new generation. No matter if it works now or later or never. Not only do we want it, but we will pay for it. Move on to the next version or market something new, add a new package, and start the dangling carrot process all over again. It wasn’t always this way; but, I’m afraid it is the norm today.

Everyone knows the guy or gal that buys a car because of the entertainment center. No one looks under the hood anymore before that recall. It wouldn’t make any difference anyhow. Facebook and a major car company both had software issues today. Everybody jumps to problematic Facebook, and that car’s software, even if changed, may not run the life of the car. No matter. We want it all anyhow. That’s the way of the world. Wait for next year’s offerings, and next year, and next year.

There’s something out there for you and me, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s permanent, Ghost.
