Yes, things have been hard but are turning around it seems.

I do still. Traded a guitar for an early 90s Pearl Export fusion kit and reskinned all the way around. 10/12/14/22 in purple lacquer. All Zildjian still.

On Thursday both the alternator in the Jetta and the starter in her parents' car failed.

Replaced the starter today, alternator tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to this, German cars are such pieces of sht lol.

After a mildly infuriating couple of hours, the alternator was done yesterday. The absolute worst part about it was the inner drive belt.

Hey, at least you were able to fix it, and not have to take it somewhere and have to pay $$$. Hopefully, nothing else will go wrong with the car in the time being. You know, Murphy's Law, and all of that crap.

That’s great that you managed to complete it, James. Those kind of jobs can often be a PITA with some things that present their ugly removal or install quirks.

I visited a cousin on a grain farm that asked if I could help him change a water pump on a tractor. We bought a new shaft from the tractor distributor and when we took it out of the box we came to the conclusion it was the same shaft as used in a Caddy. We went to the GM parts store and picked up one of those and returned the farm version because it was quite a bit more pocket change just because it was an agriculture product.

We couldn’t get the original shaft out because there wasn’t enough clearance with the radiator. Well, that was a problem. We thought we might have to remove most of the front of the tractor, but the two of us pushed, pulled, lifted and shimmed the front enough to do the job; but, not before we found two disintegrated felt washers with the original bearings and shaft. The washers were not as beefy as the boot felt inner soles we found to make new ones. Voila! The tractor got a new life. :D
What a great feeling when it all comes together, huh, James?

Pretty bad for an alternator, considering the one for my vehicle is a 12mm and 2 14mm bolts and it's out.

Had to drop the AC compressor, 4 drive pulleys, a number of mounts for the pulleys. It was a serious btch.

That certainly qualifies as a PITA. Sometimes, I think it’s designed that way to increase labour costs. On the other hand, you can’t always have everything easy to reach. It’s the jobs where nothing is easy to reach and comes complete with scraped knuckles that makes me mellow.

The other option was removing the passenger side motor mount and jacking the motor up in hopes of having enough space for It to come out.
