Hey everyone. I'm sure you get a ton of these "what's my guitar worth" posts. This isn't meant to be that necessarily.

I recently acquired this guitar. Here are the pics.

https://imgur.com/a/44WtYsU

The interesting thing is, I can't find ANYTHING referencing this model number anywhere online. I called Fender and they asked for pictures. I sent the pictures and they basically said "yes, we made that guitar but don't know anything more about it"

Its a California Series "Cali Classic S" classical acoustic guitar.

The interesting thing is the serial number - Its CS10000005

The guy I spoke with at Fender indicated that with that serial number it might be a prototype?

I'm just curious for more information about it.

This guitar is crafted overseas.

The Custom Shop never did classical guitars, only solid & hollowbody electrics.

There's a subforum for Fender acoustic instruments, I think it's the right place for sharing your thoughts with other players.

I think the interesting part is the nearly squared off shoulders on the upper bout.
Almost like a dreadnought.
I don't know if I have ever seen a nylon stringed guitar shaped like that.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Very interesting post and photos docpoco. Thank you for joining us and sharing your story.

That’s quite the find you have. What I find interesting is that your guitar is both classical and a dreadnought. The fact that it is also nylon stringed also adds a little mystery with me thinking that were this to be a match it would be more likely follow the dreadnought path of being a steel string relative.

As you probably know the classical guitar is usually well balanced in tone and is typically for picking while the bass and projection of a dreadnought lends itself more towards strumming; although, picking obviously can be done. It looks like you have a hybrid. This might work in your favour making it less common.

My first guitar was a small nylon classical. My second was a jumbo western. My third was a 12 string, and my current (aside from the Strat) is a Venetian cut Grand Auditorium. I tell you this because (like BMW-KTM) I agree that your design for a classical nylon is not something you run across every day. I seem to recall seeing a similar squared off build by the neck many years ago; although, not as we have here. It may have been an Asian or Middle East traditional instrument. I can’t really say. If I find one like it I’ll post it here.

The serial number is interesting too. The CS could have a variety of meanings to choose from. Let’s say the C stands for China. Okay, but it really is not necessary with China already documented above on the label. However, Fender serial numbers as a rule do indicate location of assembly or build or both, so I have no reason to think this number would be any different per se with C standing for China. That leaves the S in CS for questioning,

With Custom Shops there is a variety of prefixes. While CN appears to look like China it is known to represent Custom from the nineties. Does the CS on this label stand for California Series, Classic S, China S, China decade, or other . . . or does the numbering give us clues to date and or location? I can’t say, and after looking around it seems to be evasive. I haven’t found another like it. Coming from China that rarity too is unusual IMHO.

Ya never know what’s out there in this big world. Perhaps, someone here in the Forum will know. You would think Fender would be able to solve this one.

Keep us posted docpoco.

What did Fender say about your guitar?

Hmmm. Let's review ... it is made in China. It is a California Series. Annnnnd ... your debating if the "CS" in the SN may be for "Custom Shop".

Really???

Similary, this is also real:

Actually, you missed the part where I said, “I can’t say”. Or the context that stated, “However, Fender serial numbers as a rule do indicate location of assembly or build or both, so I have no reason to think this number would be any different per se with C standing for China.” Better look up before ya hit those trees.
