U2 have apologised for cancelling a concert after Bono lost his voice.

The Irish band were playing in Berlin on Saturday but had to stop after only a few songs as their lead singer struggled on stage.

The band said in a statement: “We’re so sorry for tonight’s cancellation. Bono was in great form and great voice prior to the show, and we were all looking forward to the second night in Berlin, but after a few songs, he suffered a complete loss of voice.

“We don’t know what has happened and we’re taking medical advice. As always, we appreciate our audience’s understanding and all our fans’ support in Berlin and those who travelled from afar. We will update you very soon.”

The statement, shared on the band’s official website, was signed by Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr and the Edge.

Bono, 58, had halted the gig and told fans: “I think we can’t go on, it’s not right for you.”

The singer, whose real name is Paul Hewson, said he thought it was not a “big, big problem”.

The American actor Ashley Judd was at the concert and shared a clip of Bono singing before his voice cut out. She wrote: “The power of #bono voice before it surprised him in #Berlin and left him abruptly … he was singing his guts out (per usual).”

Judd added that “the crowd so felt for him” and he was “obviously powerless and vulnerable”.

“He’s real and he’s human, too, like we all are,” she said.

The band were performing in Berlin on their Experience and Innocence tour and are next scheduled to play in Cologne on Tuesday.

U2 frontman Bono says he expects to be "back to full voice" for the rest of the band's tour a day after a Berlin show was cancelled over a vocal issue.

"I've seen a great doctor," the singer said in a statement, adding that he was "happy and relieved that anything serious has been ruled out".
U2 fans were left disappointed when the Berlin show was cut short on Saturday.
The Irish band had played several songs before Bono apologised to the crowd, saying: "I think we can't go on."
Those at the Mercedes-Benz Arena were initially told there would be a short pause, but were later informed that the show was over. Bono then promised that another gig would be arranged.
In his statement on Sunday, the singer said his "relief" at being able to return to performing was "tempered by the knowledge that the Berlin audience were so inconvenienced".
"There was an amazing atmosphere in the house, it was going to be one of those unforgettable nights but not for this reason… We can't wait to get back there on 13 November," the statement added.

What happened on Saturday?

It was the second night of the European leg of U2's Experience + Innocence tour, which had kicked off at the same venue on Friday night. Bono had been singing Red Flag Day when he lost his voice, according to those at the concert.

That's too bad for the fans who came out to see the concert. The voice is such a sensitive thing. Things like stress, allergies, viruses can all really do a number on your singing voice. Kind of surprised this type of thing doesn't happen more often.

We are all just so lucky that Ashley Judd was there to take control of the situation and throw in her two cents (as usual) when no cares what she thinks...

Voice loss is a very real and disturbing thing. Just like a musician knows his instrument, so do vocalists. Guitarists have the ability to change their instrument while vocalists are blessed with the instrument they have and good or bad, improved or failing, great care must be given to maintain it. You don’t get to chuck the old one and replace it with a new one. The general rule is that if it hurts or if it is not functioning as expected, stop using it. Immediately!

Bono, like him or not, is a professional in every sense of the word, and I believe he would not upset his fans or his team. There are those in the industry that put themselves first, regardless of the need to. I do not think Bono fits this lot.

I wish him the best for a speedy recovery. Perhaps, a rest is all that’s needed.

Last year we lost out on a concert with Miranda Lambert who cancelled at the last moment without much information. Fortunately, it was a freebie. :P
