Is a "V" profile easier, better, worse etc than a flatter "C" profile? Entirely down to your preference. You have to play a few to get a feel for what you like.

This profile chart will show you the differences :

The difference is the back of the neck. One is more "C" shaped and the other is more "V" shaped. It's pretty simple and all personal preference.

I have an Ovation Legend with a V type neck. Very nice guitar, but I really prefer the feel of the C neck. It's all a personal thing.

Yep, all about what it feels like to you. Personally, I like the V better.

Don't have the faintest idea what the profiles are, just bought ones that sounded and felt good and like to play the things.

Here's an image with example guitars of the various shapes. I don't remember where I got the image from.

Hope this helps,

I was waiting for someone else to mention this:

But has anyone seen the new necks for the 08 Gibson Les Paul? I don't know if the offset thing has been done before. Any thoughts?

The necks on Ernie Ball EVH signature guitars, and perhaps even the Peavy successors. Do I have the order of succession correct? :?

Kendrick guitars in Texas (same company that used to make the tweed 'clone' amps) supposedly has used this feature for several years now-but I haven't seen much about them lately. From what I remember, they got that idea from a very old Gretsch guitar, so from what I can figure out, that idea has been knocking around for years.

Good chart giljanus.
I don't like hard V necks or flat ovals.

As the chart says about the hard V's--they're for thumb over players. While I do spend some time with my thumb hanging over--that's not my most common or preferred way to play.
The flat oval is the opposite--it's too flat--I don't feel like I'm getting a good grip.

I'm not a big fan if the soft & medium V's, but the soft might be okay--depending on the guitar.

I prefer the C & U necks.

But we all have different styles & different shaped hands--so if those necks are comfortable in your hand--go for it.

The only way to know for sure is to try them out.
