These days we seem to have the impression of not having any expressive guitar players who are actually real stars.

This is due to the fast lane life we’re living, where anyone with a smartphone can record an album and we get tons of tons of tons of information per sec everyday.

But truth is, we still do have some GREAT guitar players out there, and meaning no less love for the giants that walked on Earth back in the 60s and 70s, we SHOULD support the modern guys who are making a difference and keeping our music ALIVE!

So this is a thread for talking about guys who are rockin’ on now.

I’ll start pointing at this young Welsh/Canadian fellow who has a taste for beat up vintage Fenders and does a hell of a good job with them: Monsieur Philip Sayce

There is not a lot of current stuff I like. But when Avenged Sevenfold opended for Metallica, I thougfht their guitar player was excellent. I am not a big fan of their music, but the dude could certainly play!!!

This guy I love: Gary Clark Jr

At first I thought there weren't any notable guitarists out there too, but the I started looking.

And many of the modern artists we often see deserve our support more than we usually give it.

Another great one, playing out of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mr. John Mayer:

Not only can the man play the blues, but also, he is good enough to play Jerry Garcia's part in Dead and Company side by side with Bob Weir and the rest of the crew.

I myself am not particularly fond of Mayer's solo work, at least when he steps outside the bluesy stuff but I do confess that I'm an enthusiast of his Dead interpretations. He does NOT try to be Jerry, he is John Mayer olaying with the Dead.

Another one we can't forget is Mr. Joe Bonamassa, a fine gentleman from New Hartford, New York:

One of my personal favorites. He not only rocks Gibsons, he does collect and play many wonderful Fenders as well. Btw the only thing I hold against him is that he seems to buy every single vintage guitar he gets ahold of and his collection seems to be huge and to get bigger every day, which gives me goosebumps, I mean, is he gonna leave any in the market for the rest of us?

Then we have this Señor who hails from Ciudad de Mexico by way of Aguascalientes, and curiously my namesake, Maná's Sérgio Vallín:

Some take the express lane and, perhaps, they peak early. Others struggle to pay their dues. Those lucky enough to make it bloom like an annual, biennial, or they continue to grow like a perennial.

I’m blown away with how lessons have changed and how skilled the youth are today; but, we should never mistake skill for being talent; although, both can work together. While that may seem an easy entry to be with the big boys, the competition is fierce. I agree that there currently are excellent players that deserve recognition, and we are fortunate to be benefiting with seasoned players today from that evolution. The progression is like a tall strong oak tree. Today’s giants wouldn’t exist without the seed. Perhaps, that’s why the earlier artists are revered.

I think the adage “sounds like” is something to avoid should one reach to be a big kahuna. To be really appreciated you have to make it your own, and it has to have mass approval. That’s a tough challenge, not impossible, but it is harder to create an original style today. In my business they used to say, “There’s nothing new in television”. For the most part that is true. Just repackaged with a new (w)rapper. Music to a degree is just that. This includes EDM in some small part if one checks the history (1948, 1953, 1985 were early key dates in the origin), it’s just that dance was less attached.

This little sprout grew up to be really big.

There are those that join the best, and then there are those that stand out from the rest. For a well rounded player, this guy has proven he can play most anything equally as well.

Okay. Now the question is whether Keith is an old school guitar hero or a modern day guitar hero. Well, in my mind he is both, and I suspect there’s plenty of goodies left in his Country and Rock tool box that we have yet to hear. 8)

Guys who belong to the old school do belong in this thread, FSB! As long as they are still active and creating new music.

That certainly rules Keef in! 8)

Sergio:

I wasn’t sure if that was to be included, if only for the fact that there are so many variables as to when a performer actually takes to the stage to fit a category. Age can’t really define a new artist in a category, and it is common for musicians to be multi talented across several genres.

That said, you have a great thread going here, Sérgio, and a lot of modern performers that deserve recognition, if they haven’t already gotten it, are sure to get respect here.

I agree with all the posts that the gang added so far and, although I am an old coot, I know and like the majority with a few new ones to peak my interest. My taste is pretty eclectic. 8)
Philip Sayce was a fine start, Citizen Cope was a new artist for me, as was Sérgio Vallin, and Danny Donato. Nice!

Keep rawkin!

I saw Keith Urban in Edmonton about a year and a half ago .... or so.
It was the very first event to happen at the newly built Rogers Place.
I have to say, even though I'm not much of a country fan (my girlfriend is) I was very, very impressed by his chops and by his ability to put feel and expressiveness into his playing but what really blew my mind was how he was doing all of that great work while dancing around on stage and smiling at people without even so much as casually glancing down at his guitar.
In my estimation, he is truly a modern day guitar hero.

I also very much admire the work of John Mayer.
He got quite a bit of trash talk on forums some years ago arising from his public admissions about his private life; things that should have been kept private because I certainly didn't need or want to hear about it.
I never let that stuff adversely influence my admiration for his abilities.
Another modern day hero.

Good call(s) on naming them in this thread.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I saw St. Vincent (Anne Clark) perform a couple of summers ago and was super, super impressed with her guitar playing. I highly recommend her albums and her recent collaboration with David Byrne.
