About 8-9 years ago, I acquired this waterslide decal from a seller on a guitar forum. The claim was that it is an original from the early '50s. I did a cursory search on the web before I bought it, but found nothing about Fraser Decal Co.

After I received it, again I searched unsuccessfully to get details on its origin. Then I stashed it with some other stuff that I might "need one day." I uncovered it a few weeks ago and made a display for it.

So, has anyone here heard of Fraser Decal Company? Is there information on the web you can point me to?

Better yet, can anyone here refer me to reliable and valid resource at Fender who may have historic data?

Cheers
JR

Those decals are interesting. I looked around and even tried geographical searches in case there was some relationship, and I found nothing close except for a decal company with the name Fraser. No details, and I’m not certain if Fraser Is the name or Fraser Premium, My guess it’s Fraser and the company likely owns the name for rights. The decal found is a MLB St. Louis Cardinals 1970s team logo. Three things. It is Fraser, it is American, it is a water slide decal, and a fourth thing is that it appears to be from the 70s. The photo below won’t be available for long because the decal is for sale, and you probably have seen this in your search. Look to page 2 of the photo.

In any case here it is:

Being that the decal above is sports memorabilia. perhaps, a sports memorabilia store could point you in the right direction?

Good luck on your search. Perhaps, Fender will chime in with an answer. Let us know how you make out TidewaterCustomShop.

I appreciate the input Brat! In my casual sleuthing, I have indeed run across other decals produced by Fraser, but never any company details much less contact information.

My final resort will be to contact Fender directly, but I've done that before with another obscure question and got no further in my quest. Friendly and helpful service, but ultimately ineffective. Now, if they could only find that stash of records to answer all our questions! I know... I know...

You are welcome, TidewaterCustomShop. Not hard to see why little information is out there. It could be that Fraser is still in business, out of business with the competition. hurt by offshore players, or maybe gobbled up by another media company. The fact that they appear to have had some great clients like MLB, and possibly, Fender as your decals would point to, there’s a story out there somewhere.

The three media companies I worked for have left the bulk of their history behind with many changes of ownership and technology. New owners are more or less keen on creating their own history, while those who have come before have often tried to recover what’s left, usually with difficulty.

The chase is half the fun. :D

Cheers!

I'm confused by the pics. Are the first two photographed with a bright light shining through the decal sheet, and the last pic is what the top of the decal sheet looks like without a light shining through from behind?

So, reverse printed? The visible surface of the decal gets stuck to the headstock face, with the side of the decal that's touching the paper being the actual top surface (after the decal is applied)?

If so, Fender only used that type of decal in the '70s. IIRC, not a water-slide decal -- it needed some sort of solvent.

Except for that period in the '70s, Fender has always used normal water-slide decals. The side of the decal that touches the paper is the side that attaches to the peghead.

Here are some pics of the decals without backlighting.
