Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Rickenbacker's "convertible" 12-string electrics (336 and 366) must surely qualify. That they remained in production for eight years is a miracle in and of itself.

Well, I’ll jump in and stir the pot. I have friends on both sides of the border that have Gibby SGs, and they like them. The sound is undeniable and is a favourite for some biggies in the industry. I’m cool with that. I can close my eyes and use my ears. For me, if it wasn’t so bone ugly, I might have added it to my arsenal. YMMV

But, since the topic is “Music gear that never really went well”... I guess that applies to when Les Paul first thought this:

The rest is history. 8)

I don't know if it more of ahead of his time, then never really went well, but Leo Fender did not invent the first electric bass, this guy did in 1933. http://tutmarc.tripod.com/paultutmarc.html

That was cool, Paul. Also interesting is the fact that Audiovox was associated back then. In the late 60s and early 70s that brand was pretty familiar as automotive tape and radio installs were at a high. Even today you’ll find that brand still involved in entertainment electronics and mobility, and considering both the giants RCA and GE got a shakeup, and Philips has changed direction, that’s a pretty amazing run for Audiovox. Great post.

Ampeg also got their start amplifying upright basses. The name Ampeg is an acronym for Amplifier and Peg. Their first product was a microphone that was attached to the endpin of an upright bass.

I'm kinda bummed the Stanley Jordan synth guitar didn't gain more traction. I would love to try one of those.
