Hello!

The top of my tone pot snapped off on my start. I ordered a new one online and soldered in the same way as the the old one, switching in both the new capacitor and pot for the old ones.

It now works as a volume control. Just wondering if I've done something wrong or they've sent me the wrong thing?

Thanks

Your tone pot work as a volume now and you ask if you do something wrong

You may have short the tone capacitor to ground.

Look at typical volume and tone pot circuit; if you short the capacitor circuit to ground you'll have a volume

Yep.
Pictures of the finished work? The only thing the "wrong" pot can do is impact the EQ curve if it's the wrong value.
Miswired? Ya... that can cause problems.

Not in my opinion.

Sure it can.
If the value is too low, then it will act like the tone is rolled off. A 250k pot "on 10" has the same value as a 500k (linear) pot on "5"
Likewise, if the value is too high, it will brighten the tone. A 500k pot on "10" puts twice as much resistance between the signal and the capacitor as a 250k pot.
The pot is in series with the capacitor, so the value of the pot absolutely impacts the frequency response, just as the cap being a .022 or .047 would.

Explain why half of the guitars build by Fender use a 250k or 500 k pot for tone ?

A volume pot must send all the signal ( all frequency to ground ) to work .
With a tone capacitor tone pot can't send all the signal to ground.

With a tone capacitor tone pot can't send all the signal to ground.

A higher impedance pickup requires a higher value pot for the tone circuit.
On the volume pot, a 50k or 50meg pot will work, but the bleed-off will impact the EQ curve resulting in the 50m pot being "too bright" (like a volume bypass) and the 50k being too muddy.
But the tone pot puts the pot in series with the capacitor, just as you have shown in your drawing.
A lower value means less resistance ahead of the capacitor... same as turning the tone down.

The tone pot

If our friendbaxter_chamberlain use pots sell as a guitar parts like 250k or 500 k ( not 50 k or 50 meg wich are not guitar parts ), pot will never work as a volume.

It is just what I say
