So, i'm going thru a major Clapton phase and have been working on this song. His playing on this song is just incredible (on the Crossroads 2 Live in the 70's) he's everywhere on the fret board. Then i think, well i'll just relegate myself to playing the rhythm - problem is, he's awesome on those sections too. Jesus he was good back then.

Guess I'll just keep working hard

Not a bad idea to play a rhythm guitar for Eric Clapton. He had a pretty good rhythm player in Cream's "Badge". Some guy named George Harrison.

Make sure you have checked out Clapton's "Further On Up The Road" with the Band in 'the Last Waltz'. Great stuff, and there is (of course) video too.

Thanks will do. In the version of the song that I’m talking about, his tone is very similar to SRV. Tons of treble, almost shrill, and lots of clean gain. Very much a Texas blues sound. Wonder how he got that.

Probably was playing Brownie - a much brighter toned guitar

It is reported that, between sometime in ‘67 until June ‘68 when George Harrison got the SG, Eric played his 1964 Gibson SG Standard (aka “The Fool” custom painted by well known Beatles’ cars artists Marijke Kroger and Simon Posthuma).

Here it is:

At 1:01 in the video below you will see his Yardbirds purchased in ‘64 cherry red Gibson ‘64 ES-335 TDC which, along with his new Spring ‘68 addition Gibson ‘63/‘64 Firebird 1 with mini-humbuckers (not shown), became his primary guitar(s) after the SG.

Okay, time to set that aside because the album in question is from live shows ‘74-‘78. Brownie would be a good guess, but reports have it that Brownie became a backup to Blackie after ‘71. Blackie was numero uno until it was retired in ‘85 (neck problems), Blackie also recorded as the chosen guitar ‘74-‘85. A few showings of Blackie happened after ‘88.

So my calculated guess is that the guitar used for the album Crossroads 2 Live is Blackie. But, hey that’s based on collective info., and there’s always the chance of Tom Foolery with print, verbal documentation, and recording.

Note: Eric had used Fenders earlier, but it became more his go to guitar(s) around 1970 onwards.

Eric Clapton used a Dakota Red 1963 Telecaster and a 3-colour sunburst 1961 Jazzmaster with the Yardbirds. Jeff Beck played the Tele shortly after Eric's departure from the band in 1965.

One of the rare known occasions when Blackie was seen by the public was for a 1990 television commercial for the Japanese automobile firm Honda when, at the specific request of the company, Clapton used Blackie to record an additional guitar solo on "Bad Love" in New York and was filmed for the commercial doing so.

Blackie was also brought out on stage for one number during the Royal Albert Hall shows in 1991.

Blackie's final public appearance dates from 2010.

One of the 175 Blackie replicas Fender released in 2006 was used by Eric for three numbers during his annual RAH residencies in May 17th of that year. He also custom-ordered another replica with Noiseless pickups and active electronics.

Clapton made the switch to Noiseless pickups in March of 2000. The change occurred a day prior to his triple induction at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Clapton is one hell of a fretboard explorer. I like how he makes bluesy solos go further and further without losing the idea along the way.
