I'm gonna get a MIM as my second guitar. It's "discount" price is 399. I know I'm cheap, but how much do you think I can haggle off that? If you've got one, how much did you get yours for?

It depends where you're buying it from I guess. The bigger places, you'll be less likely to get a discount from my experience. Local shops may be a bit more lenient.

I checked the internet just now......and that seems to be the standard "discount" price right now.......but then, who knows how good of a bargainer you are. Maybe you can talk some salesperson to dropping just a bit lower. I believe they work on commission, you know.

Well, I've got a MiM Tele, and same price. Dude, as for haggling, they might give you a free strap or cord, but don't push or ask for it (as I'm sure you know). If you want to haggle, it's possible, but you won't get much off.

Don't rule out a used or pre-owned guitar. There are some great deals out there if you look hard enough.

I've seen MIM Standards going for as little as $275, used, but in very good condition. Good luck!

I'm with Mike on this one, and I've seen a few in that very condition cheaper. Check you local Mom-n-Pops...

With all the "usual cautions," try EBay. I got a '72 reissue Thinline Tele for $330 when they were selling everywhere else (e.g., on line) for $599. Even with shipping added in, my final cost was just $379 and no sales tax. It's virtually mint, came with everything it should and the seller claimed it had never been used. (So what explains the small chip, I wonder?)

Look for several sellers who seem to always be selling hundreds of items. I think what they do (though I can't prove it) is that they go around buying up returns, floor models, etc. and then resell on EBay. If you read carefully, they usually don't say "never opened" or like that.

This seller had 15 - 16 auctions going on when I bid on the Tele. Another tip: he was an EBay certified vendor which generally means that he sells in high volume and has a retailer license. I'm not saying that guarantees honesty, but at least you know the person isn't some one time seller with no track record.

I'd also try craigslist if there's one for your area. I've bought and sold gear that way.

You should check craigslist. I got a practically new 2003 MIM strat there for $250. There are a lot of guitars out there that are just sitting in people's closets and never get played... :(
