Hi gang!

This is not the best place to put this, but if it keeps you up and running for the Forum(s) . . . then perhaps, it is. Our gear uses computers more today, and while many are savvy enough to know these hacker and malware problems and preventions, many are new at this or unaware of what’s what. Here is the alert:

Heads Up!

There is a scam going around that gives you a code to use to confirm a Google association with a tablet or phone (not sure about a laptop or desktop, but there’s always a possibility).

We got it on an iPhone and an iPad. It came through iMessage and it also can be associated with SMS. You may get it on your Android as well.

The message came from 220-00 and that is one clue (however, it could be an unknown phone number, perhaps, (614) 695 - 4736 or other instead).

You’ll then be asked to text a provided Google verification code (under the sender 220-00). In this case the code number is 625263.

DO NOT OPEN MESSAGE! DO NOT TYPE OR SEND THE CODE!

TAP EDIT. TAP SELECT BUTTON TO LEFT OF THE UNREQUESTED MESSAGE. DELETE THE MESSAGE!

Google will never ask you to text back a verification code. If you didn’t make a request - that is also a red flag.

If you unfortunately do send the code, change your password immediately. If you get locked out of an account such as Gmail, contact Google Support.

Similar emails and messages can also be treated in a similar way. Use at your own risk.

Hope this helps.

FSB

The only time I gave access to ANYONE was that time a barrister in Africa was trying to send me his inheritance. Oh and the time the FBI called me from Mexico about my income tax payment. But other than that, NOBODY gets access to my accounts.

You are welcome. I learned the hard way. I thought I had enough knowledge and savvy to not get nailed. The creeps are getting smarter with different tools.

A number of years ago I was trained about security by someone who ran the University of Alberta computer division and later someone who was involved with the computer division of the Government of BC.

Later I spent the better part of a day and night with two fellas (me on Vancouver Island, and the others in England and Virginia) triangulating and decifering where a hacker was. He had rerouted us into a confidential FBI site. We nailed his location!

But, on another occasion, my wife told me to pickup a phone from a conversation already started and, without knowing the full conversation, I saw all of my data fly by at lightning speed like you see on a movie. Pulled the plug and reinstalled everything.
It can happen to anyone. Ask the Pentagon.

Anyhow, good luck with the scoundrels and have a pleasant hacker free day. :D
Oh, and one more thing. You’ve probably heard this before. Apple doesn’t get viruses. Ask me. I have all three OSs.

You're joking about that right? I haven't heard anyone speak that sillyness in a long time.

Perhaps, you are right. Not many want to talk about it now. I could have filled more than a few convention centres with those who did, and now they’re vewy vewy quiet. Lesson learned . . . or maybe not. :P

The next thing will be comparing thumb and facial recognition. Good thing because I don’t recognize myself in the mirror when I wake up. I have both and Phht! I don’t get all warm and fuzzy about it. My Strat makes me feel that way. YMMV

I guess that was some Apple marketing that caught on? I don't know where it came from but people who worked in tech never believed that. At least not the people I worked with. My dad on the other hand...

Here's my take on the facial recognition/finger print scanning as a way of unlocking things. If someone in a dark alley knocked me out, would they be able to hold my phone up to my face to unlock it? To test this, close your eyes, stay real still and have someone else hold your phone up to your face. I'd be interested to know if that works.

The fingerprint scanner would definitely work if you were unconscious. Would it be legal, in the event that someone were arrested, for the police to gain access to your phone that way? I know if they asked for my password I would suddenly forget it. Ya know?

Pass codes or words definitely have their advantage, but aren’t totally secure if your legs are broken or you get the Yakuza pinky cut. :P
I scoff at the finger scanner used on mobile phones. It is more of a gimmick than the real thing, and it has been hacked with high def photos of a finger and finger prints lifted from a variety of sources. One of the reasons that the system is cute is that no phones AFAIK use body heat and moisture to tell it that the finger is human. It is more or less a graphical image of the finger whorls and loops. It doesn’t work in cold weather with gloves on and here is where the Yakuza cut could be tragic if the correct finger is not known.
Passcodes are, for the moment, an additional option for when you give the finger or the face.

Facial recognition, while not perfect, is different amongst manufacturers. Apple seems to have the mobile standard by a long shot for now, but as with all leading edge technology, there is room for improvement and it will come. For now it’s said to be on a comparable mobile device a 1 in 50,000 chance to fool a finger scanner, but 1 in a million with the facial scanner for Apple. You can’t use it with closed eyelids and some close proximity and angle is required. No worries that a screen shot or camera hack will be of use because there are 2D/ 3D differences amongst other things like transmission and reception. Nothing is impossible including the severing of a thumb.

The beauty is that facial recognition has other features for other apps and future considerations. You can wear gloves. Passwords, codes, and finger scanners are no competition in those areas.

This is a pretty good introduction on this soon to be common practice:

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.macworl ... q.amp.html

All said and done, you are correct that passwords/code(I think less) are a fine way to secure your data for this purpose. Online is a different story.

The FBI paid 1 million dollars to an Israeli company to unlock the phone like the one my wife has. Not everybody has a million smackeroonies, but then maybe they don’t need to.

Life was easier with the candlestick phone downstairs, and no telemarketers.

what about this? (those are stickers on his eyes in the bottom pic). And stickers would conform to the shape of his eyes, thus they are 3D.

To me facial recognition and finger prints are just two more pieces a hacker needs to steal your identity! As if they don't have enough already, right. Don't fall for it, wait for the DNA milli-second scanner w/ blow tube.

Well . . . we’re all in trouble when they put the chip inside us. :P Let’s face it. On the other hand, as I see it, that will eliminate hackers because they won’t want another one.

I wonder if I’ll be able to keep my same phone number?

Nice thread and article, FSB. I don't lock my phone mainly because it is always on me. Sure it might fall out of my pocket and then someone could access all sorts of private things that I have on it, but I am super careful with it. I tried locking it but having to unlock it all the time bugged me. So, in a sense, I am more vulnerable. I think I would notice very quickly if my phone was missing and there is a way to wipe it remotely. Facial recognition is very cool and, when it is reliable on Android, I'll take another look at it. No pun intended. :D

Thanks, Marky. Some of us remember when phones were phones and then texting was added. Each to their own. How many times do we hear of the quality of the phone? Hmm.

As for security, my bank and others got hit across the country recently. They have enough data on me to sink a ship. I use a separate limited credit card and PayPal for online shopping. I pay that off after a transaction to manage it and then I know if a problem exists to the penny. I bank at the bank, at times by phone with no personal trail and another layer of security, and I do hard copies for tax, although government wants to stop that like every other organization, and they too get hacked on a regular basis.

Aside from having contact information and such, not much else of real importance. Email? Sure. All that info can be found or stripped easily with and without a phone. It just makes things easier for the thief. I own a shredder for personal garbage. I use blocking and an answering machine to thwart scammers and telemarketers.

I used to research for my own documentaries and other projects without the computer, using microfilm at the library, directories, contacts, and other things. I’ve been in contact through the front door and through the backdoor of important places across borders that you might think are secured; but, then again there are layers of security, and I’ll keep this short. The phone is not a very secure layer in any sense of the meaning. It might make you feel more comfortable, but risk is relative. I had clearance on warships, and you’ll soon learn that the best way to keep a secret is to not keep a record of it. The rest is hearsay. Period. Organized crime knows that.

Authorities have my information and hackers can get that. My take is your data is more at risk when you use it not when you don’t.

I’ve used mobile phones for more than a quarter of a century and still have most of them, never having lost them or having had one stolen. I’ve lost several wallets. I’ve had a credit card stolen which paid for a new car engine installed by a thief who drove across the country. My official paperwork and identity went with him. My phone security is boring compared to that.

But, dang it all. I miss that wallet, and my keys, and my CDs from the car, and convincing Esso that I didn’t use their card to make a holiday out of province was a treat since I never left town. They had a limited contact time that presented a problem. Things finally got straightened out, thankfully. :?
Touch my phone, and I’ll have my people call your people. Maybe I’ll even look you up. Maybe they’ll lock you up with facial, voice, gps, and profile recognition. How’s that for security? 8)
Ciao!
FSB

Get yer wallet out if it’s not lost because these security choices will set ya back thousands:

Thanks for the interesting video, FSB.

I forgot to mention another thing that I do to help keep my phone secure. I recommend everyone do this. When I leave my house, I turn my wifi off and when I get out of my vehicle, I turn off my Bluetooth. I read somewhere that if you're in a mall, for example, hackers can steal your data via your Bluetooth.
