here is a great analogy...

Guitar Hero is to Guitar player

as

Goat Herder is to Diesel Mechanic

In my opinion, the only good thing about Guitar Hero is it gets young kids listening to cool music again!

That's a great analogy.
Didn't Prince Akeem of Zamunda say that he was a goat herder?

I don't understand why some musicians are so offended by Guitar Hero. Right now, I have a Fender Strat, and Epiphone Casino, and and a little white Gibson Les Paul all lined up, because I've played all three today.

It's a game, get over it.

That being said, I'm not terribly good at Guitar Hero.

I would agree with this. It is night and day, in comparison. But....if it motivates one to take on learning the guitar, that's a good thing.

I have a 9 year old grandson, who is a video game freak. He started playing Guitar Hero, and it perked his interest in trying a real one. I explained to him that it wasn't like a video game, would take a lot of practice and work, but something well worth the effort.

Last Christmas, I bought him a starter guitar and amp, he started taking lessons........and he's still going on hardcore with it. I don't see him slacking at all with the REAL guitar.

So......I guess it can also be a good thing.

All jokes aside - I agree with that last post about the 9 year old - I have a little cousin, he is 10, and he is quite the guitar hero - he stands in front of the TV like he is in a trance and doesnt miss a note on the hardest levels - crazy to watch - But, the video game also got him interested in the real deal - he actually has a cool squier strat he is learning to play on!

I have a similar story to Syeklops, substituting my 14-year-old son for his grandson. As you might surmise from the animation in my sig line, he's been working more on guitar than Guitar Hero (although that changed temporarily when the Aerosmith version came out :P ). He's got a good ear and picks things up fast; tomorrow we're going down to sign him up for lessons. And it all started with a video game.

And in the end, that's all it is, is a video game, no more, no less. It won't be the downfall of music any more than the Madden series ruined pro football.

Um... I played guitar hero before I was able to get serious into it... but that's only because mom didn't let me play guitar until I had three years of piano. And then she bought me a first act ( Way against my will. She is a blonde who thinks a guitar is a guitar). So I'm fairly similar. But in truth, guitar hero can only help a little in speed and coordination.

It's cool that Guitar Hero might motivate someone to play a real guitar. But GH has as much to do with guitar skill as pounding away on an old typewriter.

I have a bit of a different story

last Christmas I was watching the news and they were showing screenshots of GH3. I asked for it for Xmas and got it (last one at the store). I played with it for a month or two, and couldn't get enough of it. I guess my favorite part was feeling a part of the music.

My dad remarried in January, and when I was getting ready for the wedding(in Australia where my soon-to-be step-mom was from!), and we were deciding what songs to play at the afterparty, we came across Cream. My favorite song from GH3 just happened to be sunshine of your love. When I said that I liked that song, my dad pointed me to this guy named Eric Clapton's autobiography. (remember, I didn't know very much about the wonderful world of guitars at this point) I read the book straight through the night and finished by noon the next day.

It just so happened that my dad had recieved an acoustic guitar for Christmas. I played around with his guitar and decided to try guitar. The rest is history :D .
