Lets see, a store filled with non players...
And mostly children wanting to touch them for no reason at all.
Whats next?
The noisy amp section over next to the blenders & fridgerators!?

Maybe this will get guitars in more remote areas to check out or somthin...
But I wouldn't buy a guitar from bestbuy ever! I don't care if it said built by God on the headstock.

Sounds like my local GC.

Seriously...I could care less. If it a piece that fits me at reasonable price, I'd buy it at a Best Buy or a Starbucks.

When it comes right down to it, I don't care where I buy my guitar from, as long as it actually is what I paid for.

If I'm unsure about what I'm buying, like the PA system I bought about a month ago, I'm going to go to a store that specializes in that sort of thing. For a guitar, especially if I know exactly what I'm looking for, I'll go wherever I can get the best price.

I imagine that Best Buy won't actually have the best price, because they won't be able to reduce it for me like House of Guitars will.

Why not buy your PA system from BB too? I just don't like it!

If the staff knew what they were talking about, and they sold PA systems at Best Buy, I'd have no problem buying it there, assuming the price was reasonable.

I went to Guitar Center because the pro audio department knows about the things they sell (unlike some of the other departments), and they had a sale.

I can see it now, you're sitting in BB trying out a new guitar when all of the sudden a nose picking 3 year old walks up to your amp and starts turning all the nobs. You want to tell him to stop but you feel kind of guilty because he's only three. You know the mom is not going to do anything about it because she's talking away on her cellphone. You go to move to another amp but then the baby pulls on the input cord sending the guitar falling to the ground and breaking into splinters, Just then one of the employees walks up and tells you that you have to buy the guitar because you broke it, you try to explain that the baby did it but he dosn't believe you, now you're stuck with a broken guitar, too bad for you.
Thats why I think it's a horrible idea for BB to have a guitar section.

A quick blow to the esophagus, and punt it towards the appliance section will remedy that situation. Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy.

If I was to buy a guitar from BB and got the service plan, would I have to bring it in for a set-up, or would the Geek Squad come out to my house?

As I've said in another thread, I don't believe this is a good idea, but I'll try to keep an open mind when I finally get to check one out. They've opened 10 of these music shops already, but nothing near me so far. Does anyone know what their expansion plan is?

O.K. so I read my original post on the other thread on this topic and I might have been a little dramatic, hey I'm a musician I'm supposed to be a bit dramatic right???

I really feel for the loyal Fender dealers who could be hurt by this.

some of these guys have been around since Leo's days and it really doesn't seem fair to them.

Mom & Pops are going away and America wont be any better for it.

I'm really not sure why this is such a big deal. A manufacturer trys to find as many outlets for it's product as it can. Then the consumer decides which is the most convienent/provides the best customer service. The one the consumer likes best and moves the most product for the manufacturer wins. In the end it's a free market and musicians will decide if it's a good idea with their wallets. If you don't like buying a guitar at Best Buy, WalMart, Target, etc.... don't. It's no biggie.

I don't see a problem, if they have an area set aside for guitars and staff who can answer questions.

I've been in Big Name music stores where the parents of some future rock star get sold an SUV full of gear or where the kid himself is talked into getting "what the name acts are playing." In that case, maybe going to BB and just trying it for yourself is a better idea. If no one there is hip to what your current fave act is using, maybe you'd end up just getting what works right with your fingers and ears.

I understand posters' concerns about the young kids running around and here I'd have to say BB has an issue to consider. As one poster put it, I would not want some "cute" 3 year old messing with my amp while I'm trying to check out a guitar. But then again, if they can't figure it out, no one will buy there. The gear they have will soon be candidates for the trash can and the sales register will show $0.

I'm not sure if this would be any worse than my local GC on a Saturday or Sunday. I play mostly soft jazz, blues and roots type stuff so there's usually little point in going to GC on a weekend unless I have time to go into the quite rooms. Inevitably, while I'm checking out a new axe through a Twin set on 3, someone on the other side is playing some thrash metal with a Marshall half stack dimed. In terms of listening to what you're doing, is a 12 year old running on 10 through the insane distortion channel any "worse" than some 3 year old?

Finally, if it was me and I was running BB ... I'd staff the guitar area with people trained to work with adults. I know a lot of adults who would get their kids musical gear, but they're not about to walk into a typical music store, or they fall into my first category -- naive and so they get very over sold. If BB could create a reputation for being honest with adults, there could be a valuable market niche there.

Like I said in the other thread, If I want something, and the store has a return policy, a warranty available, and the best price then I will buy it. I don't care from whom or where I buy it. I would buy it from a voodoo woman named Phyllis if she had the best price.
