So with Fender having dropped Gretsch, I don’t think Slingerlands would be a good marriage with Fender. I dunno. Sometimes a second marriage works just fine.

3rd marriage... don't forget Rogers (and for that matter, Rhodes if we're looking at keyboards)

Funny how the music business acquisitions work out. Perhaps, not so much for all though.

Baldwin had a desire to cash in on Rock and Roll by getting into the guitar business. In the mid 60s FMIC was unsuccessfully targeted for purchase. Baldwin did buy England’s (number one guitar manufacturer/distributor at the time) Burns which then became a fiasco with quality, and in 1970 Burns was no longer being made by Baldwin or anyone for that matter. Baldwin held the name and maintained control while clones and other similar Burns identities were used.

Later America’s Gretsch was snapped up by Baldwin in ‘67. Again, not surprisingly, quality problems helped to stop building those guitars too in ‘81, Baldwin returned that purchase to the Gretsch family in ‘85.

Both Burns and Gretsch found new owners over the years that followed. FMIC took Gretsch in 2002.

It was reported in a given year that Baldwin piano sales were only 3% of their billions of dollars profit. Can’t say how that would calculate today.

Yup.
Shows how it is best to stick to what you know.
If you buy a successful company because you want a piece of the pie, then continue to allow the existing chefs to run the kitchen. Putting your bean counters over the managers and workers is a sure-fire road to the end of the division. At the very least, micromanagement by ignorant managers destroys morale, which hammers quality and productivity.

Yup! I’m with you on that one, Rich. I've seen that happen when radio and newspaper honchos waltz into TV stations.

However, on a larger scale, I do know of a major Soup CEO who, as a surprise to me, did very well running a Network, and an accountant (who started her accounting career at my TV station) who eventually became a Vice President of a larger Network with support and admiration on both sides. See the difference?

The ones who thought they could run things the way they ran their hard nose operations were not as adept in an industry that did not dictate as they do in print media, nor were hatchet men the norm in TV as they were with radio format changes and pink slips. After all, we not only supported our money losing radio stations and news departments (until they became a priority adopting revenue making entertainment), we made money for the network until being cannibalized by those who had nothing to offer, but plenty to take. At times, change of ownership was the business plan.

Today, it’s monopolies, but I digress. Still, it sets the scene.

Leo wasn’t a musician, but he certainly knew his business and he surrounded himself with great advisors and support. FMIC and DW are fine examples of how to sensibly make things work IMHO. I’m pleased to use both of their products.

My pleasure, Rollie. I recall you liking the Vistalites. I thought they played well and sounded as good as they looked. I never did see Gretsch's Vista Look-A-Lites, though. So many great drums and percussion tools today that would buy a lot of guitar gear; but, thanks for mentioning those Tricks! Man oh man. So much to like. Those Custom AL13s are smokin'. I really like how that company puts their effort into the hardware, and I really like they way their mounting is. I'll take an engraved snare too. Well, if I could I would, unfortunately, at my age it would be under used and over appreciated. Let's face it, there's a lot of axes and gear to drool over too. I'll be asking Santa for a Music store this year.
