Absolutely. The way I used to practice improvisation was to turn the radio on and play along with whatever came on. You kind of had to drown out the vocal track. Backing tracks are so much better to practice with.
And when you get bored of backing tracks, try playing along with some karaoke recordings. You can play the melody of the vocal or just improv.

Exactly! I'm more of an improv guy and enjoy these backing tracks a lot. Good way to practice those scales too. :-)

I agree that backing tracks are a great addition. I get original recordings from a friend who has also included vocals, and he gives me minus one versions so that I can add my own vocal both for practice and enjoyment (when it works hahaha). The original lyrics have been provided by me. Not quite karaoke, as ghost_of_strings made a great suggestion to do as an option, but it could be. A tip for karaoke for those who are not familiar: All karaoke media is not up to par. There are a lot of excellent karaoke tracks, but some are terrible. Before purchasing, you may find some available to listen to or sample on YouTube or elsewhere online. Some are free, others for subscription or for purchase. Try the free versions or samples, and take note of the producer or distributor. You’ll soon know what and what not to get. It’ll narrow down your choices and likely save you some time too. New discoveries are the exception, of course.

Old school was playing along with records (at various speeds). I used that for learning guitar and drums (especially without having my own big band to jam with). What a treat to have plenty of easily available backing tracks today. Of course, if you have the tools, you can also make your own backing tracks, but there is so much good stuff available that the extra work might not be worth the effort. You might check the copyright and/or permissions if you decide to use it for other than personal in home use though.

In any case it sure is fun. Enjoy. :D

Great backing track website, Ted. Thanks for the post.

This list and others like it may also be another resource:

https://www.top20sites.com/top-backing-tracks-sites

Just a heads up. Generally audio and video files being data files will not carry malware or or viruses. They can, however, have a virus be spoofed with a name change from malwaretitle.exe to songtitle.mp3.exe, The .exe extension identification could be compromised and not read in some address bars or whatnot or simply misunderstood, and the accompanying icon can be changed to look legit. File folders and programs along with other questionable methods can and do pop up on those rare moments to infect with viruses. It is not my intention to elaborate on the ins and outs or possibilities when it comes to infected downloads or playing of music files. That’s another topic.

This should not prevent one or worry anyone from using these files and websites as long as you keep your computer up to date with security, and use safe practices accordingly. As said, malware and viruses are extremely rare; but, it does happen as with any other music site. Some are better than others and, for me, a site with a proven history says a lot.
Besides, they are there to use as many here can attest. :D

Cheers!

You can create your own backers too with software such as Mixcraft.
